When to birth casing (Pictures)
    #1780734 - 08/05/03 06:10 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

Hello!

Some person I know got this casing, cased with vermiculite and brown rice flour, colonized substrate taken from another casing, right after first flush. The casing was made 4 days ago today, and there are some spots of mycel on the top and on the sides. So, I was wondering if anyone got any idea on when to birth it, judging from these pictures (not the best pics). Needless to say, this is his first casing, and the reason he didnt do it with a whole pf cake, was that that his starting material was from a piece of already flushed casing from his friend.

you cased with brown rice flour? the casing layer should be non-nutritious.

what do you mean colonized substrate was taken from another casing? why?

it looks like you're trying to spawn pf substrate with an old casing. this won't work.

Ok

The method used was the following; after the first flush from a casing, some the colonized substrate was used to colonize another, of course not colonized casing. This seem to be working out, since some white mycelium is starting to show up in the box. What I was wondering was basically how long I should wait, since the process seem quite slow. This procedure should work in theory, and is working as far as I've got some fluff. The answer "wait until completly white" was somewhat what I looking for, but like I said, its kind of slow, so when should I just go for it, or should I? And also, is there anything safe I could do to speed up colonization?

thanks!

so what youre saying is, you took the colonized substrate and mixed it into pf substrate (BRF/verm)?

explain your "casing" in detail.

sorry.  what you are describing is a bulk tek using BRF/verm as substrate, and an old casing as spawn; this isn't a casing youre describing.  PF substrate just don't work like this (i've tried)

next time you want to "stretch" a casing try pasturized straw, or cow dung.

Ok! I see, thanks alot! But anyways, what should I do with this box/casing/bulk, it is partly colonized, and seem free of contams, so I will give birthing it a try,. But how long should I wait? since it has become partly colonized in a few days, I was thinking that it would colonize fully sooner or later.. Should I expect any more colonization if I wait more, or should I just go ahead and try to birth it right ahead?

did you sterilize the brf/verm? in my experience it will stall, then contamn.

if its only been four days, so it's too early to say anything for sure. it looks like you used coarse grade verm, so maybe it will loose enough to colonize. i'd say wait a week or so.

the spot in the pic looks like healthy mycel, but it's too blurry to be sure.

good luck!
