My uncle's brother's half-son's mother has 3 cakes, each one cut vertically in half, fruiting in a fairly humble little terrarium with damp perlite for humidification and a layer of vermiculute over top. The first two flushes worked out well, producing good mushrooms and showing no signs of contamination. There were some discolourations on the cakes...some mycelium bruising, some purple areas from spores dropping onto the cakes, and a slight golden-yellow coloured area or two which appears to be the substrate showing through some thin mycelium.
The third flush is apparently underway, and so far I have one or two different looking mushrooms. One is about an inch or two tall and has a deformed cap... it's not round, but oblong shaped. And the stalk of the mushroom is a bit darker than some of the other mushrooms at its stage of development.
Another mushroom, which is the first one I picked from the 3rd flush, had an oddly shaped stalk, from about half way up towards the cap. It was more oval shaped, whereas every mushroom from the first two flushes were all nice and rounded.
Does this mean that the cake is contaminated and that the mushrooms can't be eaten? There is a fair bit of blueish bruising, and the purple spore areas... but I don't see anything that appears to be mold or spreading contamination.
Wish I could post a pic, but I'm unable to.
What should I tell my uncle's brother's half-son's mother to do?
