I'm very confused! please help
    #1780244 - 08/05/03 02:32 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I found some shrooms that look like copes, but they don't stain blue.
I just finished reading LOTS of posts and descriptions about this type of mushroom, and still can't be sure. Any help will be much loved. I'll give a breif description, and post a few pics in the morning when the print is done.
the gills are grey, cap is white, stem is slender and reddish brown and solid (not hollow), it bruises brownish red, growing out of horse and cow dung in north central florida (outskirts of gainesville).
the main reason I'm confused is I've read some copes do and some don't bruise blue.
Thanx for checkin this out, I really appreciate the help.
Any other details anybody might need will be supplied asap.

Sound's like you've got some Panaeolus antillarum on your hands. They're nonactive and look just like Copes. Copes will almost always briuse blue.

Upon closer inspection, there are little maggot like worms in the gills i don't know if this is significant, hope this helps... i'll have a print in the morning (if the wormies don't eat them first)

I stand by my word... still those damned Panaeolus antillarum. They should drop jet black spore prints, just like copes. Those antillarum are some tricky bastards, eh?

Not active, not poisonous, not edible(well, not interesting at least).

Dammit! i hate that, but love you all for the info. You'e right, jet black print. So if I find the same mushie that bruises blue, it's a true cope?
thanx again for the help (I'm less confused now). I'll try and find the bright red ones (I know where a lot of those puppies are!) and real copes today.

That's pretty much how it works. If they look like the mushroom you found, bruise blue, and drop a black print, then it's a cope.

Before you spend a bunch of time looking for Amanita muscaria(bright red one) I'd reccomend that you read a few trip reports and decide if it's really worth trying. A lot of people HATE the experience. Amantia's are not psilocybian, they contain totally different chemicals... the "trip" is nothing like cubensis or copes.

Some people love it and some people hate it. I think that's they way it goes with these less "popular" entheogens. There really isn't too much of a middle ground. I think it would still be worth a try. I read it was kind of like a dreamy/drunken state. Also the effects seem to very with the season it fruited in. You'll have to look at when this is but during the less potent season it is just like a (nice) body buzz. During the more potent season, it is more psychedelic. Ether way gumby is right, it is nothing like psilocybian. Look on erowid for some info. One more thing: be extremely careful when you id them, just because it has a bright red cap, does not nessiceraly mean that it's Amanitia Muscaria. There are some deadly poisonous Amanatias. Amatoxins are not nice.

Again, you are all FANTASTIC!! thanx for the help. I'll be researching more, but if I need help, it's nice to know there's people of your caliber out there.
