Michigan 'magic' shroom hunting!
    #1779948 - 08/05/03 12:55 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I have recently been out to my local cow pasture and had no luck finding any shrooms growing out of the dung. What the hell is the problem?

Look up Panaeolus subbalteatus and hunt for those. You won't find cubensis growing(outside) in MI.

Look for caerulipes also. Even if it's not listed in your state, it could still be there. Just don't expect to find a lot of info on that particular species. It's an elusive little bastard.

Good luck hunting, hope you find something

Anyone have any pics of these growing out of the dung so I can be clear of what I will be looking at?

Do a search for panaeolus subbalteatus, or pan subbs for short and you will find many pictures of pan subbs growing on decomposting horse dung or even composting hay or grasses. Even do a google image search.. As far as caerulipes go, as far as I know they don't grow on dung. They grow of decomposing birch or maple, near areas of water runoff or by drying stream beds.. Happy hunting...theres a few post about them here.. use the search feature to the board located up top..... go back a whole year and pick and choose.. Good Luck...

I said "look up" because I wanted you to look up the mushroom and find habitats and pictures on your own. We're not here to spoon feed you. We did our share, now you do yours.

P. caerulipes seems to like when it is in the 70s during the day, and 50s at night. They fruit around the second week in May on Long Island. They come up here at the same time as the Stropharia rugosoannulatas, but they don't keep fruiting as long as the Stropharia. That is probably why they are so hard to find. MI is likely to be much later than that.

Good luck.
