Challenges with Puerto Rican strain?

Hi all - back again. I've read a number of the postings on Puerto Rican strain, and thats what I currently have incubating. This is my first attempt and I am planning on fruiting the cakes on damp perlite in a clear tupperware container. What I have read leads me to beleive the PR is hard to fruit? Any suggestions from those with experience? I have never dunked or cased before, but have time to learn as my 1/2 pint jars (8) are only 2 days old. I would consider even a small harvest sucessful on the first try. Many thanks for the advice.

my advice is, don't check them every day, just forget about them for a week or so, and when you birth them, don't open the container 2000 times a day. and about fruiting, use the cold shock tek to initiate pinning, i would do a cold-dunk to moisturize AND avoid contams germinating in warm water. good luck, and have patience!

Hey - thanks to all for their patience with the newbie. I checked my temp range this AM and it is ranging between 83.3 and 85, so I'm going to take your advice and forget about them for a week. That should give me time to read up on the dunk TEK. Appreciate the help.

They are a great strain. They will colonize fast it's when fruiting starts that they can test you a little. Now if they are true PRs your gonna see funny looking growths that look like little balls. No big deal it's just myc getting a little funky. Pinning will start a little bit after you see these.
They are well worth the effort.

Hey Magash,
thanks for the pic. Worth a thousand words as they say.... Got my spores from Sporeworks, they seemed to be reputable. I'll keep an eye out for the funny little ball growths. Glad you gave me the heads up, otherwise I'm sure I woulda freaked....

Thats interesting...my kitten has had absolutely no problems with puerto ricans, although she does have the poofy mycelium balls Magash mentioned. In fact, she has several cakes brimming with pins (dunk 20 hrs and cold shock) in her terrarium with perlite. Many of the pins are already more then an inch long..yippee!

Thanks for the info - So would your kitten suggest using the dunk / cold shock on the cakes once fully colonized? Do you do that all at the same time ie: in a water container in the fridge for 20 hours? A lot to be learned.....

Yeah, my kitten just scraped the verm off when the cake is still in the jar, adds sterilized spring water until the cake is floating, puts the lid back on and puts it in the fridge for 24 hours. It seemed to work really well...everything's ok for her so far. Pins all over the place! Good luck!

Awesome info - that sounds like about the easiest and most efficient dunk technique. I was wondering how I could dunk / cold shock without risking contam too much...
So what is Overlay? not familiar with that term - and why should I look out for it? Thanks again for the insights.....
