Just out of curiosity, would something bad happen if instead of using a half pint, you used a pint jar (still using the half pint formula)?

If thats what you have use them. Sometimes having less substrate to colonize means nothing unintended has a chance to gain a foothold. If your doing the PF, I would probably suggest adding some dung to the formula to help speed things up. I havent done that with the PF but using dung in bulk has taught me that mycelium grows like crazy with it. There is a tek somewhere with the amounts for doing that somewhere.

Maybe I'm just simple, but where do people get dung? Is it available at garden stores as fertilizer?

So I'm actually going to have to do something to get this? I have to walk to through fields to get it?

Yeah. Go to any garden store, ask for manure.
