Saturday Mushroom Hunt
    #1774557 - 08/03/03 12:07 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

OK, got up in the mountains today to hunt. It's still pretty dry here, so there weren't very many mushrooms around. But there were a few.

This first one is Amanita muscaria var flavivolvata. These were the most common mushroom around, but most of them were in really sorry condition. This one was the best looking one I found.

This one is Lentinus ponderosus. That's a quarter beside it for scale (it measures 9 x 8 inches). I spotted this one from the road while going about 35 mph. It smells just like mastutake do.

It was delicious (the little one hiding under the edge)!

Finally, I found this lone Boletus edulis which was trying to hide under a log. So I took it home and ate it (well, half of it, so far). No bugs at all! It was about 10 inches tal.

Happy mushrooming!

Very nice ToxicMan! Glad to see you posting some pics, I love seeing other people's finds

Do you have any tips for finding Boletus edulis? I'd like to try it some day.

Here they seem to like to be at the border between an open area and the forest. I usually find them along trails or at the edges of clearings. Here in Colorado they seem to be around spruce and lodgepole pine.

Also, Amanita muscaria seems to be a good indicator species for them. When the Amanitas are up I know I should keep my eyes open for boletes. Of course, the Amanitas are much easier to see.

Good luck and Happy Mushrooming!

I've been using a Canon S30 I bought a bit over a year ago. It doesn't do so great on real closeups, but it does good on general photography.

We're not getting that many here yet. I hope we get some decent rains over the next couple weeks (from the monsoon flow). If so, we might get an OK season.

Isn't your area's season more early in the year (when it's frozen here)?

Our season is November/December through April/May. After that we get nothing! :frown:

Well, keep posting pictures so I dont go through mushroom withdrawls for the next few months!
