It never pays to fully upgrade your system unnecessarily
    #17726299 - 02/01/13 12:15 PM (11 years, 23 days ago)

People have this crazy idea you need to go out and fully upgrade your computer all the time for games.

I don't think you need to get a new motherboard or a new processor all the time just to get what is new.

I upgraded my Graphics card and had a high end budget card to begin with, and it worked great, now its a physx card. on this older system it will do me just fine for several years. I don't want to buy any more new equipment when this will do. No upgrading this older board it has a fine architecture and nothing will really make much of a difference at this point.

New game consoles need to be out for a while before I want to pony up for a new gaming pc, I like using my computer, and getting good performance is pretty easy because nothing is really stressing the system enough to want to invest before the next console cycle. I love an older gaming PC

depends what you are trying to play. Upgrades aren't as nice as brand new builds. Software upgrades aren't as reliable as back ups and fresh installs. In some cases you got a good mobo and processor and ram and lot's of hdd space and a gfx upgrade does you very well. When you see how next gen consoles perform you'll want to upgrade your pc for sure when the games run better on a pc gtx 690 or whatever.

Right now I found out my xbox 360 runs crysis 3 very nice, well the multiplayer demo isn't all it could be, but it seems it can run single player fine, so I'm still happy, but definitely in the future when I see newer games I'll want a pc upgrade, and new drivers, and a separate partition for windows 8 just to play games if directx is updated to directx12, etc. Doubt directx 12 or next gen consoles will be out any time soon, so you've got some time. Your system run an i7?

No, seriously I have nothing close to that and don't care too much.

AMD Phenom x4 9500 Black Edition
Asus M3N72-D
630 Watt Xion Power supply
800MHz DDR2 Nvidia Patriot Gamer Series Memory
Old video card was simply a DDR2 9500GT with 1gb!

Now it's a physx processor with a GTX550ti as the main video card.

A gift from my pops in 2009 except the graphics cards, that's why I went with the budget card he suggested and had loads of fun with that.

now my new graphics card makes for a better experience overall.

I do lots of stuff on my PC and don't want anything new, I have years before I am bored

I want a new TV eventually, and I plan to invest in a Blu-ray drive when it becomes time, but that's it, I want to use this bad boy to it's fullest and save my money!

That's awesome man. It's nice to be happy with what you have instead of always chasing the next best thing. Good for you.

That's not exactly a HORRIBLE build right there. quad core processor, 4 gb ram, plus your old card had

1GB vram and a 128-bit bus DDR2

What is your new card exactly? Or is it the same one? There would be no reason to massively upgrade your system right now, but in 5 years you will probably change your mind. And btw who says a 650 watt psu is over kill? Cmon if you build a computer these days it's almost under heard of to use a psu less then 550 watts. I wouldn't by any means call a 650 watt psu over kill, a 1300 watt psu made for a server, that'd be over kill. But no surge of extra power can damage that main board, its why computers these days are made with bios locks, only by over riding those locks and over clocking the processor could the computer take in more power, and only the hardware you over clock will be allowed to take in more power, dangerously or not. It's why computers don't fry when you turn them on, and it's why everything has a set clock rate. If his power supply was over kill for his board he'd know, it'd be incompatible, meaning his board would accept a 16+4 pin connection and the psu would offer a 20+4 pin connector and the two would be completely incompatible.

Maybe not all of them but at least some of them:

GIGABYTE also uses Anti-Surge ICs to protect the motherboard against power surges. ... The 78LMT-USB3 motherboard is designed to offer a stable, high-speed ... Advanced Clock Calibration, which is the newest feature comes from AMD ...

I never buy technology when it's brand new.

Wait 6 months to a year and it will be half the price it was.

you dont need brand spanking new hardware to run anything you need to.

so what if games get 90+ fps instead of 60,  your eyes only see at 24 FPS anyways.

$900 will play all the latest games for years to come (and make them look great!) if you buy the desktop box parts yourself, and anyone who can plug a wall socket in can figure it out with just a minimum of homework.

True. I built my current pc in 2007, and it was average back then. I could max out pretty much any game up until the last few years having only upgraded the graphics card once. These days the cpu is starting to seriously bottleneck things tho, ram too mostly for non-gaming work. I'd be content upgrading those but this socket type isnt even in use anymore and i could use more storage space and a new case too. 5-6 years is a good run. Currently saving for a new rig. :vaped:

good call, if you do put something together, put something together very badass, at least with regards to processor, motherboard and memory, so that you are well above the curve for a while, and graphics cards can be upgraded.
