Hey y'all. Hope you all had a good holiday!
Good news. My bud's EQ cakes that were birthed 6 days ago have started to pin! Plenty of hyphal knots on the others so it will be a matter of days until he has some real shroomage.
Lots of pics showing pinning cakes around and I am curious to know the chances of contaminating the cakes when admiring them or taking them out of - in this case - the PMP. He would like to get a snapshot or 12 of his first pins EVER, but doesn't want to risk contams.
How hearty are the cakes at this early pinning stage? Makes it tough to document his grow with photos if I can't get good shots due to them being in the PMP.

It's ok to handle PF cakes as long as some sterility precautions are taken. Use "Oust" air sanitizer before removing the cakes from their containers, and wear sterile rubber gloves. I personally wouldn't have the cakes out of their PMP for more than 5 minutes. That's plenty of time to take pics, though. Enjoy.

Better safe than sorry... but if you must, you must. Just keep everything clean like Cooltuba said. I'd also wear those mouth covers... but thats because my breath stinks.

a properly handled cake should not get infected before it has flushed a few times...be sure consolidation in core of cake has occured before intrducing to fruiting conditions to reduce chance of contam...otherwise the cake will just wait an extra week to start pinning until the middle has consolidated, leaving more time for it to be exposed to contams

I use gloves when spawning. I would never touch a cake without gloves. alcohol rinsed gloves.

Yeah, leave them alone. If you don't believe you have a problem, there's no real reason to be taking pics of something that will get you thrown in jail for multiple years anyway.
If you just can't help yourself, they should be alright if you touch or take them out. They're pretty damn contam resistant when fully colonized.
