Interesting Amanita.
    #17746648 - 02/04/13 08:48 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

These are unfortunately cellphone photos since I found these at work. I am currently drying them and will be mailing to Dr. Tulloss after communication through Mushroom Observer. Check out the cool cogwheeled rim at the top of the bulb. Growing under hardwood (oak?). Any thoughts?

Looks like FL sand/dirt on them

I've never seen any Amanita like these. They are really neat.

Very cool looking. The tree doesn't strike me as oak though, the leaves almost look like Eucalyptus.

Closest thing I can think of is A. pantherina, but if you're in Florida that isn't likely. It doesn't look quite right for that anyway.

Eucalyptus only grow "wild" on the west coast of US. What region is the OP in?

There are a few macroscopic features that don't line up with Amanita baccata, for example the striate cap margin. But thank you for the suggestion! I was thinking something more pantheroid because of that funky collar of tissue at the top of the bulb. But there's no ring!

I do think the original observation resembles that taxon, but these were much sturdier and the caps larger. Though subsection Gemmatae is very promising.

oh i thought you said these were the same species in your pm.
the sand (a natural habitat for sp-S01) is a bit distracting in these photos.

Yeah, I was kicking myself when I got home and the photos turned out this way. I should have taken more time. The caps were a light tan, but could have started as yellow. I did mention in the M.O. post that they could be the same as that first observation.
