Temperature ranges for incubation
    #1775062 - 08/03/03 10:06 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Hello to everyone - I'm new to the board. I have a question and I couldn't find a definitive answer in the FAQ's. I have just inoculated my first batch (Puerto Rican) using the basic method - brown rice flour and vermiculite in 1/2 pint jars. In reading the TEKs, I see a number of diff. temp ranges for incubation. I haev built my own version of incubator - flat tupperware container about 8" tall and have it sitting on a heating pad on low with 4 layers of towels between the contaner and pad. I have a memory thermometer and recorded temp range of 79 - 81.5 F The Tek I followed says 75 - 85. Ohter TEKs say never over 80. Can anybody offer me practical advice from experience. Just don't want to screw up my first batch. Many thanks in advance.

try to keep it in the 84-86 degree range, heating pads can be hard to narrow in i've tried that setup and didn't like to much.

TMC states the ideal incubation temperature for cubies to be 86F. Since temperatures over 86F result in a drastic reduction in the speed of growth, my friend incubates at 85F just to be safe.

Thanks for the replies. I have removed 1 layer of towel and have the temp stabilized at 83.5 - 84 F. I think I'll leave it there for a while and observe.
