Hey lookit this hugeass fungus formation!
    #1775006 - 08/03/03 06:42 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I found this growing apparently out of the ground at the edge of the woods behind my house. Any idears what it might be? It's about fourteen inches across.

Wow. Crazy shit.

Could be Hen-of-the-Woods, or Grifolia frondosus. I found a few huge clumps of them about a week ago in my mom's woods after some heavy rainfall. They almost looked like heads of cabbage or something. They're supposed to be edible and highly prized.

Namaste.

That looks like Meripilus giganteus. To verify that, try bruising or scratching the pores on the underside of one of the caps (your fingernail should work). For this species it should slowly bruise black.

It should be fruiting at the base of a stump or from some buried wood.

Gary Lincoff says they have a texture and flavor similar to liver, and rates it as a choice edible. I'll leave it to you whether or not a liver tasting mushroom is choice.

Happy mushrooming!

OMFG ! ! ! *pukes*

I broke a piece off to bring it inside to scan. By the time I got it to the house there were literally hundreds of tiny little white bugs leaping off of it and squirming around on the pore side.

That was fucking disgusting. I dropped that motherfucker on the ground ans left it.
