sterilizing water for syringe making
    #1773939 - 08/02/03 10:30 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Wondering if this is an acceptable way to sterilize some water to make sysringes...I'm thinking of taking a small poland spring water bottle.. sealed ... put in in the microwave on a pulse cycle (15 seconds on 15 seconds off for 3-5 minutes and let it cool... i would draw water by piercing the bottle with the syringe instead of opening it... anyone think this would work?

Or um just boil some distilled water and pull it into the syringe and let cool.

Yeah that sounds waaaay too complicated for what you need. Boiling tap water makes it pretty damn sterile enough for syringe making.

Does tap water work allright? I have always been concerned that a high mineral content could cause mycelium to grow?

Hmm, but if I was keeping the syringe stored wouldnt it just die off after a while?

Wait what? You are trying to store mycelium in a syringe or spores? Normally syringes are used to store spores for innoculation, and they last a long time (more than a year pretty sure). If you want to store mycelium (such as honey-tek or something) you can keep those in the fridge too. My friend has used four month old liquid mycelium to start popcorn and such, works great.

No I mean, if my tap water has high mineral content, very hard water. Can't that cause spores in a syringe to latch on and mycelium start to grow? And if I am storing the syringe for a long time wouldnt everything just sort of die? I guess I am asking if distilled water is really a good idea.

Accutally, its far from unheard of it. A quick search through the contamination forum reveals more than one occurance of it. Here is one with a picture and Anno's reply:

Well.... heres my dilemna ... i have two new sterile syringes.... I was hoping to sterilize some water that i could use a few hours later to inject into a half pint sporeprint jar... then let the spore solution hydrate overnight... and use the remaining sterile syringe to inject all of the spore solution into pre sterilzed jars the folowing day...Was planning on flame sterilizing before each loading of spores into the syringe and between injection of each jar to minimize the possibilty of cross contamination...basicly my problem is i dont have enough syringes that i can boil a pot of water and pre-load individual syringes with boiling water... there are going to be 60 jars to innoculate simultaneously
