ok so i got hit by the black flyes (i checked on my casing today to see 2 or 3 of the little bastards running around on the mushrooms) i tossed the whole thing heres my question, how long do u think the flyes and their eggs can live? i have a few tubs almost ready for casing. should i just wait a few days and toss em in the chamber? or should i go outside, and take out all the geolite, bake it, and bleach out the tank? [hyp] oh yeah, how exactly does one prevent these little flies? id like to do shroom logs, but i guess thats not gonna happen during the summer time.... not with these friggin flies around.... perhaps it hitched a ride on one of the mushrooms i brought in with me from outside? if so how did it make its way into my tank? should i be worried about the stuff in my incubator??

it depends on the humidity and how much moisture is available. they die in a matter of hours in dry conditions.

in my experience, i tend to get a couple flies hatching from pasturized substrate (straw or compost). not enough to cause problems, just enough to notice. hopefully this is also the case for you.
good luck, i hope you figure it out!

Shit, well my terrarium is 100% humidity, plenty of water... so i suppose they wont die in a few hours.... the "flies" are more like gnats, they are really tiny.... fruit fly size... if they die in a few days i can just leave my terrarium empty untill my casings are ready... if not have to clean the bitch out... ill probably end up spraying everything wiht bleach solution... the little flies are too small, and the geolite affords too many hiding places... plus if they laied eggs in the terrarium.... then who knows when they will hatch.....
IN FACT!!!!!!! if u look back at one of my old posts, from like a month ago or someting i saw a single gnat fly out of my terrarium when i was fanning... i paied no mind cuz it was only 1... i bet that fuckin little shit laied eggs,...... GRHGIAUEYIAGWDUYGAWUYDAW
i hate bugs..
u say a few flies isint a problem, but a few flies produces more and more, and before ya know it, the room is infested with them no?
i just had to throw away a sack of WBS cuz some fuggin moths laied eggs in there.... it was ALIVE with maggoty little larva.. i went ahead and pressure cooked it anyways.... i hope my mushrooms enjoy the worms.,.. MUhahah revenge!

well, if i were you i would get a plastic cup, some vinegar, and some plastic wrap. Fill the cup with 2 inches or so of vinegar, put the plastic wrap tightly around the top, then poke holes on the top. The flies are attracted to the vinegar they will go in the top and drown themselves. I would put this trap next to my growing space. I guarantee it will help you.

When I got those little flying bastards, it took me forever to get rid of them. Turns out they had found an old sack of compost I had forgotten about in the closet. I kept cleaning my setup and they kept coming back. Make sure they aren't hanging out somewhere else and simply moving in after you clean.

well i really dont have any organic material around my room, aside from my substrate, so i think im in the clear. it wasnt a large infestation, i think i maybe have seen about 5-6 total in the past few days.... i dont think they have infltrated my incubator..... im just gonna wait 1 more day, then bleach the shit out of my terrarium. that should kill any remaining flies or eggs.... then im gonna tape up any little holes, and pray to god that it was an isolated incident....

Polyfill works good for those little holes as well. Still allows the terrarium to breath, but the bugs cannot get through if you pack it in thick.

I've got the bastards too... found about six or seven off them on one of my casing and threw it out. Found one on my other casing and squished the bastard. One even got into one of my pf jars with tin foil wrapped over the top!
Do you think they are laying eggs or just feeding off the mycelium?
Don't wamt an outbreak of maggots, so do you think I should throw all possible contaminated jars and casings out? Really don't want to have to though
Off down the shops to find some decent fly repellant anyway!

i belive they are laying eggs....
my bedroom doubles as my grow room, there are no bugs in here one day i see ONE gnat in my terrarium, it looked all happy and innocent as it flew away.....
a few weeks later i have about 5-6 of em..... unless it called its buddies im betting it layed eggs on my casing.
i just got done bleaching out my terrarium. no signs of the gnats, i will be putting in my bulk caings soon....
i suggest you move all your current casings outdoors to salvage what u can... it sucks, but its better to stop the gnats than to deal with them all summer long.... (IMO)

surely the eggs would turn to maggots first though?
