Simplified guide i made for my first grow. thoughts and opinions?
    #17684691 - 01/31/13 07:11 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

So, after researching how to grow for the past several weeks, I made myself a simplified guide to follow. I'm basically following the steps of the PF-tek.

I was wondering if anyone could help me find anything that should be corrected, or add anything that i'm missing.
this will be my first grow, and the two syringes i ordered are arriving tomorrow.

"
My Personal Growing Guide using pf-tek
(for 5 jars)

1.____________________________________________
Jar Materials

• 5  half-pint jars
• 5  lids with four eighth-inch holes punctured in each
• Micropore tape (medicinal tape)
• Mixing bowl
• 1 cup  Brown Rice Flour
• 1 cup  Distilled Water
• 2 cups  Vermiculite

Jar Setup

1. add vermiculite into the mixing bowl.
2. add distilled water.
3. mix.
4. add brown rice flour.
5. mix.
6. fill jars to the rim with the mix. (lightly, no packing it down at all.)
7. wipe the edges of the rim with a sterilized cloth.
8. fill the rest up with dry vermiculite, only. (not the mixed substrate)
9. attach lid to the jar.
10. cover lid with micropore tape.

2.____________________________________________
Inoculation Materials

• Latex gloves
• 90% isopropanol (optimal)(70% isopropyl alcohol [rubbing alcohol] will work)
• Jars, from previous step
• Lighter
• Spore syringe

Inoculation

1. put on latex gloves
2. use the alcohol to rub on gloves to sterilize
3. use lighter to heat syringe needle to red hot.
4. let needle cool for a few seconds.
5. hold jar and needle at an angle, and inoculate
with the syringe right up to the edge of the glass.
  (all four holes)
6. repeat steps 3-5 for each jar. (yes, reheat the needle for every jar.)
7. allow jars to sit in a 70-80ºF area for around 2-3 weeks.

3.____________________________________________
Terrarium Materials
(you can make the terrarium before step 1, if you want, just don't add the Perelite or brown rice flour until the birthing process.)

• Large plastic container, with lid (large enough to fit the jars)
• Perelite (one bag will be enough)
• Brown rice flour (enough to add a thin layer on the area of container)
• Drill
• Jars with colonized substrate
• Spray bottle
• Distilled water
• Vermiculite
Optional Materials:
• Light
( - 6500k is optimal, for CFL look for "daylight" label.)
• Time-controlled switch for light.
• Towels

Terrarium Setup

1. drill multiple holes into all sides of the plastic container, even the bottom and the lid.
2. rinse Perelite. (to remove dust and such)
3. add Perelite to the bottom area of the container, about 1-2in. up. (don't pack down)
4. place terrarium in designated growing spot.
(optional) if setting up a light
5. if setting up a light, adjust it to be above, and slightly off-center from the container.
6. plug the light into a time-controlled light switch to automatically
turn the light on and off.
7. adjust the timer to preferred  on/off length.
8. make sure it works, and leave it be for the fruiting stage.

4.____________________________________________
Birthing Materials

• Jars with colonized substrate
• Bucket or bin (large enough to hold the 5 cakes)
• Distilled water
• Vermiculite

(tip: from what i've read, after the substrate has been fully colonized, the
mycelium is able to fight off contaminates, as well as the substrate not
having enough nutrients left to allow contaminates to grow.)

Birthing Process
1. remove substrate cakes from the jars, and soak them in water for 14-24 hours.
2. roll the substrate cakes in dry vermiculite to completely cover the substrate.
3. place vermiculite-covered substrate cakes into the container.
4. once all the cakes are in the container, place the lid on it.
5. let it sit in the desired area for about 2 weeks. (preferably 65-75ºF)
6. fill the spray bottle with the distilled water.
7. spray cakes lightly for the next 24-hours. (around 4-6 times)

5.____________________________________________
Harvesting Materials

• Substrate cakes with fruited mushrooms
• Knife, just for help
• Wax paper
• Fan

Harvesting Mushrooms

1. start by removing the mushrooms one at a time, by slowly twist-pulling or use
a knife to cut them off at the base.
2. if it's too difficult to do step 1, carefully remove the substrate from the
  mushrooms.
3. for drying, lay each of the mushrooms out on wax paper and let them sit
until dry with a fan to increased the drying period.
4. for eating fresh, just make sure to wash the substrate off, first.

6.____________________________________________
Weighing Materials

• Scale
• Mushrooms (dry or fresh)
• Paper bags

Weighing

1. calibrate scale.
2. place mushrooms in a paper bag.
3. set the paper bag onto the scale to calculate the total weight of
    your flush (total harvest).
4. if wanting to weigh for separate doses, add mushrooms onto the scale until
the weight is the dosage you prefer.
5. according to various sources on shroomery, fresh mushrooms weigh 10x the
weight of dried mushrooms, so calculate accordingly.
  ( ex. 35g fresh weight = 3.5g dried weight.  )

7.____________________________________________
Consume and Have Fun.

"

Keep in mind, this is for my first time. I'd just like any assistance.
if it's completely wrong, then please tell me, or if you'd like, help me adjust it, accordingly.

Thank you for your time.

Also, in case anyone else found this useful, I'll update it as more correct information is posted.

  (not the lid, though)

The lid should have holes as well.

Quote:

4. add a thin layer of brown rice flour.

Definitely don't want to do that.

Quote:

2. dry off the dunked substrate cakes, and roll them in dry vermiculite to completely cover the substrate.

If you dry them off before rolling the vermiculite won't stick.

You can use a knife to cut them offat the base.

3. for drying, lay each of the mushrooms out on wax paper and let them sit
  until dry.

You should have a fan blowing on them.

haha, yeah, i realize. :tongue2: but, i've been updating it as i find more correct information.

i've been getting my info using the original pf tek, searching on the forums, here, and watching youtube videos to see, on average, how people tend to do it.

and thanks! i just wanna be able to avoid shady dealers, along with their marked up prices, and just have that feeling of accomplishment of growing my own.
