Where our tax dollars are going?

Iraq informant will get his $30m, says US

Duncan Campbell in Los Angeles
Friday August 1, 2003
The Guardian

The Iraq war version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? has its first big winner. The US state department yesterday announced that the person who led the American military to Uday and Qusay Hussein will receive a $30m (?19m) reward.

The White House spokesman Richard Boucher said that the sum of $30m - $15 million for each brother - was the highest ever paid under the state department's "reward for justice" programme. He said that there was still $25m (?16m) on offer for information leading to the capture or death of Saddam Hussein.

The Hussein brothers were killed last week after a firefight lasting four hours at a villa in the northern city of Mosul. Photos of their dead bodies were published to convince sceptical Iraqis that the pair had indeed been killed.

The state department did not name the recipient as a matter of policy. But, in the tradition of pools winners and lottery millionaires, helpful neighbours have already fingered Sheik Nawaf al-Zaidan. He and his family decamped from his home, the house where the brothers were found, on the morning of the shoot-out. They have not been seen since.

The money can be paid as a wire transfer, a deposit or even cash, a state department spokeswoman said yesterday. If the lucky recipient wants to identify himself, thereby discovering all the relatives he never knew he had and reuniting with long-lost friends, that is up to him, she added.

The US secretary of state, Colin Powell, still has to officially ratify the payment but this is a formality.

The recommendation to pay the full $15m for each son was made by the defence department earlier this week. Part of their calculation may be the knowledge that news of a jackpot payout on the brothers could prompt a tip-off on Saddam himself.

Whether the winner of the payout will choose to remain in Iraq or head for the United States is unclear. If he chooses to leave, he would receive assistance in resettling from the state department.

This is a shame. They could have used that money to buy a 40 oz for each welfare recipient.

That money already has a specified recipient waiting, this whole thing is set up to benefit somebody, and it's definately not gonna be some shmuck whose tips lead to their retrieval. lol, this is soo ridiculous!

That didn't even make sense.

Anyway, if it saved one soldier's live then it was worth it. The tipster undoubtedly saved them time, and lives by reporting the boys wereabouts. It was worth the money to get these guys. It is also a relatively small amount of money compared to the other costs of the war and rebuilding anyway.

By all accounts he was one of Saddams buddies. Do you pay tax so guys like that can take it?

What evidence do you have Uday had anything to do with the attacks on american soldiers?

You are an idiot. The more time they spent doing raids looking for them, the more chances nutjobs would have had to shoot at them. This guy was a business man that used his connections to make money. We had to pay him either way, to show everyone that we will pay up when you give us what we want.

Shakta: Anyway, if it saved one soldier's live then it was worth it.

so....a US soldiers life is worth 30 million dollars? I assume you value an innocent Iraqi's life to be equal to a US soldiers, yes?

according to various estimates, there has been a MINIMUM of 5,000 iraqi's killed during the war,

5,000 x 30 million = 150000000000 us dollars. whats that? 150 billion?

so if an Iraqi's life is equal to an american soldiers life, Couldnt the american government have spent 150 billion dollars solving this problem>? instead of killing all these people? im sure they could have.

Actually no, I don't value the Iraqis lives as much as American soldiers. I am not saying they don't have value, but to me American soldiers are worth more. Period. So yes I think an American soldier's life is worth $30,000,000. I also think that the sooner Iraq is rid of Saddam and the rest of his thugs the better. I think it will save American and Iraqi lives. If $55,000,000 is worth getting the war over quicker if possible. Why is this even an issue? I think it is totally ridiculous to complain about a bounty on Saddam's head. If we end up paying it out, it will be money well spent. It is better than $500 toilet seats, and $300 hammers.

So you are for putting a 30 million bounty on the head of everyone who has killed an american solder?

The last figure I heard was 147 dead - that's 4410 billion we need to find.

Don't be an asshat Alex. I know you are good at it and all, but you know that is not what I meant jackass. Your figures are wrong anyway. That would 4.41 billion.
