Accidentally steamed jars for 5 hours, are they still viable

Hey.. my friend accidentally steamed some quart jars 1/4 full of vermiculite and 3/4 full of hominy (corn without hulls) for 5 hours (4 hours too long) He wants to know if the jars are still viable mediums for mycelium growth, and if so, how long can he delay innoculating the jars after they cool off?

If the water balance in the jars is still correct, they will be viable: the delay between the jars being ready to innoculate and being innoculated should be as short as possible: there is no difinitive answer as to how long they can be left, but the longer they are, the higher the chances of contamination.

5 hours??? You can't be serious. How the hell do you do that without boiling off all of the water?

My friend did 3.5 hours on his first BRF ever - and it turned out fine. I think it depends on several factors. I would sacrifice one jar and check the water content by squeezing the BRF/Verm and see if it is moist. If it is, you're most likely ok.

You could probably boil some distilled water and insert 2-3 cc's into each jar with a syringe if you needed to regain some of the lost moisture. Just try and keep things as sterile as possible because you are taking a great enough risk as it already is.

i see a problem with water distribution in the jars, the grain won't soak it up evenly.you would have to submerse all the grain and let it soak it up again.you would have to put just the right amount of water in there or you'll have standing water.thats a hard guess to make
