I like it. It's time to start thinking like the enemy.

Wow, after the rave reviews you two gave it, I'll save myself the pain.

It was definately interesting.

I can't say I agree with it all, but most of it shines with considerable truth, imo.

The site makes a few good points. I'll give it credit for that, but when it started using irrelevant statistics to prove it's point I had to laugh.

>>> It dropped to 3.5 percent by the time LBJ left office. It climbed over 5 percent shortly after Nixon took office, and stayed there for 27 years, until Clinton brought it down to 4.5 percent early in his second term.<<<

That had nothing to do with Clinton.

>>>School vouchers are just a backdoor method to "resegregate" the public schools.<<<

Bullshit. I don't understand why anyone would be fundamentally against vouchers in their entirety. To me it's a matter of how they are implemented.

it's cause they shift responsiblity away from lawmakers to fund public schools.

well, if everyone started bailing on public schools, then those left there would be shit out of luck. it's like this where I used to live, hawaii. for the first 2 years I went to a good school, the private one in my town. really rich white kids.

then my mom got in a car accident. uh oh, no more money! here's where you'd say "well, if only there where vouchers". well, first of all, the vouchers would be equal to the money spend on public education, so it wouldn't be nearly enough. second, if all the fucking rich whiteys had to go to public school (like in the town I live in now - well, kinda, there's a poor public school and a rich public school) then it'd have money.

anyway, these practical concerns really aren't the issue. free and public education (I mean a liberal arts education, NOT corporate training) are requisite for a liberal democracy to function. the USA in falling into facism precisely because of a lack of this kind of enducation. informed consent man, INFORMED consent.

I think vouchers could be done in a way that would leave more funding per student in the public schools.

Vouchers are supposed to foster competition, which can lead to more efficient use of what funds there are, i.e. more spent on actual learning versus administration.

the problem with fostering competition in the academic world is that the benefits of a complete education are more subtle than politicians (and the general public) are aware, making the "results" that schools are competing over unclear.

there is less and less education happening and more and more corporation drone training. bill maher makes a funny joke about this in his new standup.

Should read:

=D

But, aside from the grandstanding and rhetoric in the article, it brings up a number of truths... I'll be reading more...
