pasteurized straw at too high a temperature
    #1770453 - 08/01/03 07:04 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

If someone were to over-pasteurize straw by allowing the temperature to reach 205f, could one just leave the straw out on their porch for like 2-3 weeks and then use it (pasteurize it again but at 170ish)? Or once you kill all the nice bacteria do they not come back that easily? So I guess the question boils down to (HA!) whether the straw is useless as a bulk substrate.

Cooking in big PC (without lid of course) with candy thermometer for temperature.

My friend had plenty more just wondeing if he could reuse this in the future. Are you sure about the "not having beneficial bacteria" part? Why do you pasteurize and not sterilize, then? And he has a drying bin outside his place for straw, dries right away, always gets it from there and never has problems.

Straw have beneficial bacteria, otherwise you'd just sterilize it.

Cool, so does anyone know whether sterilizing straw makes it permanently useless or will exposure to the elements (obviously without causing rot or something) make it useable again in some time? I mean I know straw is cheap and all, just wondering...

kuk:  Mix it with some unsterilized straw in a bucket of water, let it sit a day or two, pasteurize.  That oughta work.
