Salem Witch Trials

If you were accused, would you not want to have the likes of sclorch, rhizoid, strumpling and other critical-thinking skeptics as jurists or would you prefer those here that eagerly swallow every second-hand report given to them as gospel?

methinks the ones you speak of would be tolerant of the occult...

I heard the salem witch trials were caused by ergot poisoning in the wheat (ergot= lysergic acid)

all these people were trippin off corrupted wheat and they thought they were in hell, or being "bewitched, or they thought they had supernatural powers, or whatever...

I also heard that some young women were having such a good time while trippin that they decided to pleasure themselves with broomsticks...

so maybe thats where the whole "witches ride broomsticks" thing came from...

Umm, I am removing sclorch from the list. He would know she was innocent, but might convict anyway just for the novelty. Did you use a magnifying glass on ants as a small child?

the "broomstick ride" was from annointing a broomstick handle with flying ointment (datura, henbane, belladonna, whatever...) & using it dildoishly...

VILLAGER #1:
We have found a witch. May we burn her?
CROWD:
Burn her! Burn! Burn her! Burn her!
BEDEVERE:
How do you know she is a witch?
VILLAGER #2:
She looks like one.
CROWD:
Right! Yeah! Yeah!
BEDEVERE:
Bring her forward.
WITCH:
I'm not a witch. I'm not a witch.
BEDEVERE:
Uh, but you are dressed as one.
WITCH:
They dressed me up like this.
CROWD:
Augh, we didn't! We didn't...
WITCH:
And this isn't my nose. It's a false one.
BEDEVERE:
Well?
VILLAGER #1:
Well, we did do the nose.
BEDEVERE:
The nose?
VILLAGER #1:
And the hat, but she is a witch!
VILLAGER #2:
Yeah!
CROWD:
We burn her! Right! Yeaaah! Yeaah!
BEDEVERE:
Did you dress her up like this?
VILLAGER #1:
Yes. Yeah, a bit.
VILLAGER #3:
Well, she turned me into a newt.
BEDEVERE:
A newt?
VILLAGER #3:
I got better.
VILLAGER #2:
Burn her anyway!
VILLAGER #1:
Burn!
CROWD:
Burn her! Burn! Burn her!...

Make mine medium-rare

Sceptics provide a way of weeding out the theorys that don't hold water. Fanatics provide away of coming up with off-the-wall, but perhaps ground-breaking ideas. Speaking of which, what are your thoughts on life Swami?

--------------------
The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

Well, if I was accused of being a witch during the Salem trials it would probably have been true:p but seriously, yeah I'd probably want to have some people around that think critically and don't jump to random conclusions based on any stimuli.

As for the Ergot thing I think that's probably the most likely explanation. There was also a lot of ergot poisoning going on during the witch trials in Europe. There were a whole lotta fearful repressed people tripping really hard and not having a clue how to explain it. If you were them what conclusion would you jump to? Since they already had a vested interest in repressing women the pieces fit.

And yeah, the broomstick/witch thing has two levels. 1) it's a symbol for fertility 2) broomsticks were rubbed with belladonna, mandrake or henbane and rubbed between the legs to induce flying visions. There are a lot of blood vessels down there that are very close to the surface, so it's a pretty smart way to take a substance that is easily toxic when taken orally. That connection didn't appear in Salem, it's existed for several thousand years.

and then what? you heartless skeptics! won't somebody please think of the children!

we don't want no children gettin hurt so you skeptics behave now.

Read the Crucible.

"What els floats on water?
Small pebbles?
No!
Wood?
Yes!
So that means, if she weighs less than a duck, it would mean she's made out of wood, which means she's a witch!"

Well, it's been a long time since I've seen it anyway...

as far as i know the witch trials went a little something like tis.

some lot of daughters had some kind of naughty secret they had to keep and the youngest cracked under the pressure and went all gaga. so the other sisters did the same an accused people of witch craft in order to keep their secret and what not.

i may be wrong but thats how i recall it. i highly doubt that ergotism was involved because that would include limbs rotting off, death and all other sorts of unpleasentrys.

the broomstick thing is very interesting. jus for the sake of conversation theres also a story from later times that they would sit by the fire to keep themselves warm and after taking the ointment would fly out the chimney, the broom stick was supposably propped up to prevent them from falling in.

I wouldn't exactly call all the thinking types here skeptics. Some are just downright debunkers and are not open the possibility of metaphysical phenomena in the slightest way.
