Larry Flynt for Governor?
    #1769545 - 08/01/03 03:36 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

I think this is cool, you Californians seem to have quite a colourful selection of candidates to choose from  :

From the SF CHronicle:

Quote:

Larry C. Flynt, the publisher of Hustler magazine, says he wants to be the Democratic Party's standard bearer -- or maybe "barer" -- in the coming California recall election, and he's running for governor.

"They said that the person with the best name recognition stood the best shot, so why not?" said Flynt, 61, who has taken out papers to run for the state's top job. Speaking in a phone interview last night from his Los Angeles home, Flynt said his reason is simple: "I think I can do a better job balancing the budget than those bureaucrats in Sacramento."

Dubbed the king of hard-core porn, the colorful publisher -- left partially paralyzed after a 1978 assassination attempt -- was played by Woody Harrelson in the biographical flick "The People vs. Larry Flynt" and has built an X- rated empire in publishing, adult clubs and on the Internet.

But "I'm known for more than pornography," said Flynt, who says he's a registered Democrat. "I think that will become evident."

And, sounding suspiciously like a candidate, Flynt says he has a built-in constituency.

"People know me. They know I've devoted most of my adult life fighting to expand the parameters of free speech," he said. "I took a bullet for the First Amendment. I'm concerned about our basic freedoms, the erosion that has taken place in the last few years. I would like to motivate people and get them more concerned."

Unlike many who say they want the job, Flynt says that he has a plan on "how to balance the budget without raising taxes . . . I've done my homework."

"I would expand the gaming and the private casinos, the slot machines," said Flynt, who is connected with the Hustler Casino in Gardena. "This would provide enough revenue to where the state could get out of debt -- the entire deficit. Nobody's taxes get raised, and no programs get cut."

The Hustler publisher says he will definitely pay the $3,500 filing fee to get his name on the ballot before the Aug. 9 deadline. But he's still working with experienced political consultants -- he won't mention names.

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

I hope he goes for it. This is almost as good as Al Sharpton in the primaries.

I love a good bloody ruckus.

It states that it's a parody down at the bottom though.

A more accurate reading will show that it says... "Prayer Parody"

The prayer is the parody, the story about Flynt calling for people to pray for O'Reilly's death is, the last I heard, true.

Since I tune this type of crap out, I may have missed the announcement it was all a big joke.

I wish I had a rebuttal for this, but it's true. I guess the proper rebuttal would be that wierdness isn't always bad.

I know you're just being funny, but I think it's kind of mean to make fun of Larry Flint because some asshole shot him and can't talk good anymore.

The guy's a self made multi-millionare, and he's a major reason that pornography is as legal as it is today (a good thing in my opionion). So I don't know if I'd call him "dumb" either. I wouldn't vote for the guy, but I'll bet he'd do better than Davis.

I can understand where you're coming from there. I've read a lot about how this is turning into a 'farce', but what's wrong with so many people wanting to take an active role in their government? What's so much more credible about a career politician who's only in it for power and money?

Actually Flint has been around the block, and he knows how the system works. He has been a free speach advocate for years, and it has nearly cost him his life. I don't think he has a snowballs chance in hell of winning though.
