When you PC or Boil the jars where should the water lvl be on the jars?

when you PC the jars you are steaming them not boiling them so you only need 1" to 1 1/2" of water tops when you have the rack that comes with your PC at the bottom the water shouldn't even touch the jars and if it dose just the botom.I don't know anything about boiling sorry I always PC my stuff.

i would say halfway up the jars...you lose ALOT of water with boiling and you dont wanna run outta water in a pot.

When you boil them should there be a lid on the pot

yes and put a barrier on the bottom of pot ie..a rack...or a towel/cloth so that that jars do NOT sit directly on the metal bottom of the pan...they will crack.

of the pan? should i use a pan or a pot to boil... the lid wont go on with just a pan..

I use a big alluminum pot with a lid, I put the water level 1/3 of the height of the jar. And bring it to a boil on high then put the lid on and turn it to low for an hour and a half. I havent had any contamination with this method, seems to work for me. I ghetto and dont buy fancy shit.

In my friend's friend's experience, the level of the water doesn't matter much, just so long as you don't run out of water or flood your jars. He's also used a big aluminum pot with jars stacked on one-another (ie: not in the water) and had no change in contam frequency (about 1 jar every 24-36).
