P.Azurescens Cultivation Question
    #1764194 - 07/30/03 09:06 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

My friend was just reading http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7978/pag/0 for home cultivation of P.Azurescens and had a few questions. In step 16 it says
Quote:

After the cardboard is completely colonized, lay maple or alder wood-chips down over the cardboard to a depth of about 2 inches.

Should these be sterile since it's indoors and in a plastic tub?
Also another question is when fruiting in the refrigerator, should the tub be deep enough that they fruit inside the tub and you just keep saran wrap or something over the top of the tub? He thinks yes but wants a second opinion. Thanks.

I would like to remind you that this tek is in the section "questionable techniques".
To my knowledge there hasn?t been anybody except Eric that would succeed in fruiting P. azurescens the way described there. And even then it?s questionable if the species was really P. azurescens.

I tried the tek, more or less, and did not get good results. A few pins but not much else. I used a 'cold finger' to cool the terrarium rather than a refrigerator. The one thing I did notice is that larger substrate volume seemed to help a bit. I never revisited the experiment, so I do not know if the observation was a fluke or not.

...yes, this area, like the cultivation of Semilanceata seems to be still terra incognita...

Hmmm my friend was afraid of that, still interested in it. Probably won't try it until their is more info on it or he might just go an experiment. Thanks.

They aren't supposed to be sterilized -- freshly cut chips should be used.

Just speaking from what I've read.... maybe I'll start a project soon. It's supposed to be a very specific substrate and thus should colonize well at proper conditions, but the goal would be to get it to colonize fast to prevent contamination, which is why the cardboard is used as opposed to just using the spawn, itself. I think the strange part is how it fruits -- I don't think you are supposed to get a lot with a lot of mycelium, just more over a period of time. I think a lot of the efficiency has to do with something in the soil (microflora or maybe symbiosis) since it grows well specifically around rhododendrons plants. I don't think a casing should be used when fruiting indoors.

Just what I understand; I haven't done it yet, but I prolly will soon.... I love a challange! I think I'm going to try a "crack the window open a certain amount" tek when it gets cold out to keep them at 50 so I won't kave to deal with a fridge. It'll prolly require monitoring, but I don't see why it couldn't work....

Cheers!

Oh -- I should probably add the woodchips should come from a healthy tree with no diseases, otherwise some fungus might already be in the wood waiting to colonize it. Something I just thought of, but I would think it could make a difference....
