oh wow. the joy i am feeling cannot be contained in mere words!
i wonder how silly i just looked, a 21 year old guy, jumping (litterly) for joy cause of such a small thing.
also, theres only two on the one cake. is this bad, good, neither, too hard to tell, whatever? it's b+. don't know what humidity is, or temp for that matter. using magash (you rock!!!) poor man's pod with perlite instead of those geostones. really want thos though! and the air feels like you could cut it with a knife right when i take off the lid!
well, even though there's only two, i'm still exstatic as all hell!!!!!

How long did it take bro? all my cakes got pins but im doubtful they will grow, and i really hate perlite im bout to buy a fogger when i got enough money. I dont think my pins will grow since they are growing so damn slow. I also hooked up a nebulizer (air pump) for air exchange. So I'm just gonna turn dat bitch on 6 hours a day. Fuck fanning I'm tired of doing it.

well, i inoculated them on june 16th, then dunk/cold shocked them on july 13th, and birthed the next morning. so, a long fuckin time! but, here they are! can't believe, and to think, a couple days ago i was thinkin bout just throwing it under some grass clipping int he backyard cause it wasn't pinning!

My first pin ever looked exactly like that. Matias Romero strain. Look at it :
The problem with this one is, that was a mutant. Very large stem and small cap. The pin didn't grew more than what it's shown on the picture. I had to lower humidity a bit and got a couple of nice shroom from this cake. What a joy, even if it was a poor flush!

ok, upon waking up at 2pm today from a party the went on and on, i find these...
i'm not too worried about that big brownish patch, it's a LOT less brown looking in real life, the pic made it kinda dark. it's kinda yellowish tan. but LOOK! that one long lil guy is almost an inch long!!!!

ok and these next two are the first two pins i got a few days ago:

they haven't done much, the lil one grew about 3 mm, and the fatter one has done nothing, the heads have gotten a lil darker, but not black, and the stems(?) are so pearly white. question is, why the slow growth on just these two, are they the aborts i heard usually happen before the first flush?
anyway, i'm so happy about the new additions! just a few more days, WOOOOO!

i don't know that tannish color arrived like the second day after it bithed and it's been there ever since not changin or anything, it looks almost like the myc stained itself by pissin, heh, it's not potty trained. but the camera made it look ALOT darker and more brown than it is.

i don't see any mold on the top. i just ran and checked on them again, it's all either pure white or the verm (fine grain). the verm has always had some really dark black peices, and some shiny one too. but i don't see any mold?! the tan is still there, any thoughts on what this might be or if it's common place? the long guy is now like an inch and a half now. and i can see the ridges of the cap forming (gettin a tiny bit wider than the stem). the TRIPlets are much bigger as well. but yeah, nothing look like mold too me, hopefully, could be wrong. i'll stop babbling now.

yeah, i think it is the pic. the top of the cake in the pic also looks a lil pink/peach-ish, but in all reality it's pure white. prolly didn't help the camera that the room was dark blue i took em in.

man, i'd go nuts not looking at them for a day. i look at em when i wake up, and then when i go to bed, so, it's a good delay for notable growth! this morning the long one is almost 2 whole inches! and you can clearly see it's mini cap. his lil brother next to him is about 3/4 an inch, and the TRIPlets are ranging from 1 to 2 cm. they're doin so well !!! and the first two pins are still doing nothing. i'm about to pick them cause i think they are aborts. they are loosing their brown head color. do i just take them off with CLEAN tweezers? or is a knife more recomended?

are the caps turning lighter or turning black? it's normal for them to turn lighter....if they're turning black they're aborts...a pair of clean tweezers works nicely...be careful not to damage any surrounding pins that are healthy...

they are turning a blackish gray, and there are no pins around them, if you go back to my second set of pics in this thred the 2 isolated pinheads are those which i am talking about. they were there about a week before the new ones.

yeah i started fanning it like 2 to 3 times a day, that's how i got the pins in the first place. it was startin to get all fuzzy, which i was told were signs of high humidity. are you saying i should fan MORE than that? damn, magash's poor man's pod really is the shit if it makes that much humidity!!!

hehe, that last pic makes em look HUGE!!!!
the yellowish tan color turned a lil darker, like really dark yellow. the pic loox orange, but it's a REALLY dark yellow. and it looks transparent-ish, like sap or something. pretty strange. you can see it in the first pic. any tought on to what it may be? should i be worried? i heard somewhere that if the shrooms are growing, it's fine. but would always like another opinion.
i'm wondering if the cake is just getting spent, took almost a month to colonized in the jar, and a lil over 3 weeks to pin. i don't know. just happy how big they're getting.
i stared fanning them like 4 or 5 time a day, they seem to be LOVING it. which mean i think i need to get either a bigger pump for my pmp or anopther one all together. but fanning isn't too difficult.
so proud of muh shroomies! could be more of em, but it's my first grow ever! YAY!!! fun shit!

it's strange, cause i used to kick these things over as a yongster, no i stop, crouch down, and take a good gander when i see them outdoors. amazing to watch them grow! you can sit there and not see anything, but if you leave and come back a few hours later they changed. so exciting!

I've been monitoring this thread with great interest
I'm wondering about your question about spent cakes. The slow colonization and pinning time -- I also have a cake that is like this. Colonized in one month. I had wondered if moisture would be getting a little low by now. The lid is on very tight.
Can someone please address this?

kewl, i thank you all for the support! i actually open the pmp less than 2 or 3 time a days, and this is mostly to fan. i'm fanning because they seem to like it and i think i bout way too small of a pump, it's only rated at 5-15 gallon aquariums. i didn't know what to look for when i built my pmp, so i grabbed the cheapest. but, all rambling aside, i only open the pod 3 or so times at most a day.

I'd like to announce that I've joined the ranks of BatFly, as a newbie grower who can barely contain himself in the excitment over what has begun inside that bubbling chamber.
I've observed pins in a jar innoculated 28 days ago, and have birthed it into my pod. This is my first birthday! YAY! HOORAY!
It's only been about 9 minutes, but already I'm feeling the urge to go back and check for progress. That mushroomy smell goes right to my head, that's for sure.

i bought my shroomies a present today. a themometer/hygrometer combo thingy. it's only analog, but hey, it was also only three bucks at walmart!
i have a new addition to my family, two new shroom babies have appeared today!!! for a total of seven growing right now. woo hoo! i have no freekin idea how i'm going to tell when the first flush is going to be over!!! i want to dunk and roll in verm when it's over, but there are so many shroomies in different stages of development! anyone have a suggestion on what to do in a situation like this?

okay, here's an update,
the big guy's startin to do some strange acrobatics! his brother slowed down alot....
in that pic you can also see the dark yellowish area i've been talkin about, it just stays as it is, never bigger, never smaller, just like that.looks almost like dead or sick mycelium to me, but hten again i'm just a newb.
as for the new guys, ons gettin big quick, and the other is really teeny tiny...
also, my humidy for some reason only seems to be getting up to 80-83%. there are water droplets on the sides, but only about three inches or so above the perlite, then it dried out. is this just a bad hygrometer? or should i invest in geolite and see how that works? i'm getting sick of perlite!!!!!

I highly recommend the poor mans pod. My pet has seen 3 cakes in the poor mans pod yeild a half ounce dry in under one week. Just be sure to clean it out a little every few months, cut some holes on top, and then move on to some higher yeilding substrates!
Don't forget to give your fungus light!

Yes most hygrometers lose accuracy when they start reaching humidity readings over 70, 80%

What kind of hygrometer do you use? I've got one of the shitty ones youg get at Petco, it pegs out at about 83%. However, I've figured out that about 80% is about 95% humidity, so I just mentally adjust.

it's a really cheapo $3 hygrometer/ thermometer combo, analog, i bought at walmart. the brand is acu-rite.
sorry, didn't feel like takin a new pic of the therm./hyg. so i cropped it out of an existing pic. just woke up and kinda lazy.

my hygrometer goes up to 90 % then after that it just says "HI" on it...i got it at k-mart for like 20 bucks, it works ok i guess

I got a good hygrometer at PETCO in the reptiles section, by the terrarium heating pads, for 5 bucks. It's analog with an easy to read scale and goes up to 100% Works good for $5.

rock on ped!!! i know how you feel! wait till more pop up when you don't expect it!
ok, on to a more serious note, noticed some darkish green  (bad stuff!) so i took a q-tip and it came off a lil just like i heard contams do. so i took some rubbing alcohol (i don't have any hydrogen peroxide) and dabbed the two tiny areas that looked a lil green. this was about 2 hours ago. the mycelium quickly turned dark, like the color of wet concrete, then a blueish. but it looks to be recovering. i also picked the acrobats twin, he aborted, but acrobat turned a lil blue (they were connected) hope he recovers well!. on of the new twin is takin off like a rocket. and i notice already about 3 new pinheads. it just won't quit! but i still can't explain the dark yellow. i hope it can sustain itself through more flushes! also, the acrobat doesn't seem to be doing much else!
so, my questions are,
1. should it be alright that i dabbed a possible contam site with rubbing alcohol?
2. does a shroom that has an aborted "twin" usually turn bluish when you cut the abort away?
3. judging by this
can anyone tell me what the dark yellow stuff is that seems to do nothing?
4. what's your opinion? is this cake goin to survive much longer?
5. what do i do to determine when the first fluch is done with all there new pinheads?
6. how long on average does it take for mushrooms to mature from pinhead to harvest?

this is the chemical, psilocin, oxidizing, and means your shrooms will be pretty potent. the easier it blues, the more chemical, so I hope you get good and fucked up!

well, all the original pins/shrooms/whatever have aborted now! the big acrobat guy seemed to be doing well but after a few days just stoped growing and the cap turned dark. there was a new fat one, but within 2 days his cap turned grayish. now i have a big one that looks more like other peoples' posts, he's growin quick. and he's only like 2 days old. is this the second flush? if so, i never had a chance to dunk the cake and roll in verm. there was no pause or anything, an i think this guy is way too big to dunk! here's a pic as of a few miutes ago...
what i'm thinkin of doin is injecting him with some sterile water. i just boiled some water and like 50 or so times (overkill? hehehe) pulled that boiling ass hot water through the syringe to kill everyting. then the last time i filled it, put it's sterlized cap on and put it in the freezer to kool.
question is (sorry, long winded today), should i go ahead and inject the cake with water?
if so, how many cc's? it's a half pint pf with b+ in case you haven't been following along.

p.s. i have geolite (leca actually) comming in the mail, i can't wait to SUPER clean the terrarium and put the cake right on the geolite.

yeah dunk it pull that fucker off.u could have suffered some drying out during colonization which leads to contams because your network isn't as strong. usually u want to dunk before first flush. but it helps when they are already pinning because u don't have to wait any longer. theyll just keep coming. hey ped urs looks really good up there. try double end casing next time and give them a place to go. hey congrats to both of you though:) i think i watched my first grow every single day from spores so i know how you feel.
