Contaminated booms... whats the story?
    #1763703 - 07/30/03 08:08 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

The Low Down: A friend has a terrarium set-up where he used WBS and Rye. Some of the jars were not the cleanest, but he put them in the terrarium anyway hoping the mycelium could fight of the contaminates. Well it looks like, after it was cased, it did not fight off the contaminates, and my friend was wondering a) is is still possible to get booms from slightly contaminated mycielum and b) if "a" is possible, are the shrooms that could grow dangerous to eat?

well, yes it is possible that mycilium can fight off contams, but in most cases it dosen't. As for them being dangerous, nobody really knows. I have heard several people who have eaten them and been just fine. Never actually heard of anyone becoming sick from consuming the mishrooms. there were tests that showed mycelium would pull nutrients from all areas of the substrate. It most likely just depends on what type of contam it is.

Usually Trichoderma sp. harzianum is the worst -- it's a mycoparasite. It depends on a lot of things such as substrain and how healthy the mycelium is and how much trichoderma there is. If there's a lot, upon depravation of an outside source of energy the hyphae of Trich coil around the host's hyphae and will produce enzymes like glucanases, chitinases and proteases and lyse the host's cell wall and incorporate it's nutrients.

This is a mycoparasite; it's its job. I've never heard of a poisonous trichoderma species to humans, but who knows. As for other things that can grow in a *substrate* there is a possibilty it could produce aflatoxin or some other mycotoxin (there are a lot.)

I heard trich was used in soviet bio-weapons research.
Then again, back in amsterdam, i sure did smoke a lot of pot.
