Gymnopilus with a brown fuzzy stem????
    #1763325 - 07/30/03 05:59 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Sorry to be a pain,,, but does anyone have any info on a species from the gymnopilus family with a fuzzy brown stem covering.. My size comparison photo is too big and will not updoad, so here are the specs.  the mature fruit is huge!!!! a good 7 to 8 inches in diameter before it split down the middle as it was found in half.  The stem a good inch in diameter.  In the top right corner you can see the brown fuzz, (it's more fuzz than fibrils), this stuff is kinda thick. Found in forest of southern New England.  I've been searching the internet and havn't found any reference to it.  Also neither of my books show gym's with anything even similar.  Both specimens are from the same dying tree, (Sassafras albidum) a member of the laurel family.
From my readings it seems it's a gymnopilus, even though it's a little warm for it.  This is not a good specimen and I don't plan on eating it.  However I saw several new fruits pinning next to this monsterous mushroom.  Most of the spores already dropped but what I got was an orangish yellow, more toward yellow than orange, The scent is rather pungent, though pleasing.  I won't say it smells like licorice more like the crushed up leaves of the tree it was found on.??  Once again I don't plan on eating this mushroom, just evaluating. Thanks still no_find_um.

I don't think you've got a Gymnopilus there. That looks like Paxillus atrotomentosus, which grows on wood, has a fuzzy stem, and a yellow to brown spore print. They should be considered inedible or poisonous. The closely related Paxillus involutus has caused fatalities.

Yours is a pretty good specimen, right at the top end in size for that species.

Happy mushrooming!
