Oysters make ya sick?
    #17629770 - 01/29/13 03:38 PM (11 years, 1 month ago)

I harvested a bunch of oysters the past few day thanks to ya'll and I been eating them alot to test em out before giving them to anyone else. I think there making me sick though. Am i eating too many in a short time span? also i have the straw logs(bag off) siting on galvanized steel fence. like chicken wire but bigger holes...Could they be taking in heavy metals from the steel? reguardless i'm getting them off the steel just for precaution.

let me know what you guys think.

peace on

Oysters are known to concentrate heavy metals in the fruits.
Are you eating them fresh or cooked?
Have you had Oysters before you grew them?

I have one very specific allergy to shiitake.
I can't eat them at all without purging ayahuasca style.
Never had a problem with any other species though.

I'm no expert but I'd find a new rack system.  galvi poisoning is a temporary reaction to zinc oxide..most commonly associated with welding and that could potentially build up in your logs.  Not an expert tho.Mmaybe the kid safe rubber dipped stuff maybe but not bare galvi imo.

Thanks guys! Yeah I don't know if it's a allergy or metal poisoning. Whatever it was it made me very fatigued and flemmy scratchy throat.

Hey bro could you be getting sick from the spores? How early are you harvesting them, have their caps curdled upward? I've been growing oysters in my back room and have developed a spore allergy that is similar to the "flu". Fever, scratchy throat, flem in lungs, and a bunch of coughing. This developed for me over a couple months of growing, and last week I had to move my substrates outside, and clean and air out my entire house so I could breath again...

Oysters have a significant spore load, and the more I research the topic, I've found that the spores, have a potent allergen in them that affect mammals. If this is not the case for you, you could try pasteurizing your straw in burlap sacks. Hope this helps...

I agree with this,  I also know a person who has eaten a species of mushroom(dont remember which one, but I think were oysters) many time without problem ate a large amount in a short time and had a negative reaction(bad enough he hasnt tried that species again)

If you are eating them raw that raises the possibility of adverse reaction as well I believe.

Don't grow mushrooms on galvanized shelving.

Oyster spore allergy takes a few years of heavy exposure to growing them to develop, so a new grower isn't going to experience it.

I'm curious about pasteurizing straw in galvanized steel stock tanks.
Do you think the heat and exposure would pose a heath risk?

I'm scared to eat them now. I just been drying my harvest. I'm kinda oyster'd out. The smell of them is not appealing to me right now.

We had a bad cold in the house the same time I was harvesting my first clusters. That or I think I may have just ate too many in a short time. I was so excited to have grown them I was eating em for dinner then when I woke up I'd eat em again with breakfast ect. I don't think it was the steel although it wasn't a good idea. They were just sitting on it not growing around it or nothing. It may have been that I just don't agree with them too. Whatever it was it has me not wanting to try them again which sucks cus I would like to make them into a bomb soup. And also give them away knowing they will not upset whoever I give them too.

I was harvesting em late and the spores were mostly like about....

I have grown oysters- pink, yellow, blue, white, and brown for many years. (10 years)  From this I am allergic to their spores.  I have been growing them in 35ft x 35ft x12ft rooms.

I have been growing them in my agaricus tray boxes, have had wonderful yields.  These are wooden boxes 4ft x 4 ft.

The major problem I have had was that after I spawned the CO2 levels were so high in the rooms when I would cover the boxes with plastic it would make me very sick!!!  I had to add fresh air while I was doing this.

I now wear a full face mask when I go into the oyster growing rooms and this help alot.

The oyster spores get every where in your growing area.  If you feel something sticky it is their spores.  They get on your clothing, in your hair, on your skin and in your eyes.  Frankly, they are everywhere.  Walls, floors and etc.

Went to see a doctor and he told me the test showed that I was allergic to straw mold and not mushrooms.  Who knows?

Hope this helps you!!!

I wouldn't say so. Unless you're talking about pathogenic bacteria.
Then again, allergies are funny like that. Unique to the individual.

Who's to say what might make you, as an individual, sick.
I eat a lot of ginger for health but it doesn't agree with everyone.

That I can not answer as  I steamed the rooms for 2 hours when the straw in the trays hit 145oF.

Was supper clean for spawning and spawn I made was clean also so no contaminates.

Junked the rooms after 4 flushes and still no contaminates just ran out of food for the mushrooms to make picking worth while.

You maybe one of the people that can not eat oyster mushrooms as some  % can not.  Perhaps you should buy some from a store and find out if those make you ill also.

That would suck but some people just can not eat oyster mushrooms.

Wrong diagnosis.  He probably just didn't have oyster spores in his allergy kit, OR he's trying to test for skin allergies vs respiratory.

Actually, allergy might not even be the best word to describe the immune system reaction to oysters, which is much closer to a bad case of the flu than standard allergies.

When I was growing a lot of test fruiting bags
for oysters, I bought a bottle of olive oil in anticipation.

Eating rice and beans daily was getting to me
and I eagerly fried up a large batch and promptly
felt ill even before finishing the meal.

What a bummer.

Still hope to have Bitorquis and Blazeii in future.

RR  It is odd that all the Shiitake you ate didn't
manage to counter this immune-reaction.

noun, plural al·ler·gies.
1.
an abnormal reaction of the body to a previously encountered allergen introduced by inhalation, ingestion, injection, or skin contact, often manifested by itchy eyes, runny nose, wheezing, skin rash, or diarrhea.

From my first exposure to the oyster spores I was immediately irritated by them.  No flu like symptoms but my eyes nose and throat and even inside my ears were highly irritated.  What ever you want to call it, irritant or what ever you like it lit me up.  I was much more careful with them after that.  I rinse them well the second they came in the house and I wash all the way to my elbows then wash my face afterward.

Unless one already has other seasonal sensitivities. It's a lot like a ragweed allergy for me and I have that allergy problem yearly. Which is why I don't let them grow very big before picking them. I'd rather have several handfulls of something to cook than bucket loads plus lung oysters (HA!!!).
