Quality of glassware

So I am looking at buying some culture tubes. There are many, many sources for glassware. However one thing that I do notice is that some are brand name such as Kimax, or Pyrex, while others are not brand name. Is there a difference in quality in any way? Or is all borosilicate glass created equally? The name brand ones are quite a bit more and I wondered if there's any real reason?

All borosilicate glass should be equivalent. Maybe the off-brand ones are not borosilicate, or maybe it's just marketing. Also note that borosilicate glass is resistant to thermal shock but is not especially resistant to breaking when dropped. For culture tubes I doubt borosilicate versus soda lime glass actually matters.

there is always a difference in quality! you get what you pay for, however the question is do you need the quality, as above, if only for tube slants then the cheap ones should be fine.

Just spend some time and shop around on ebay, and dont impulse buy... You can get great deals on quality glass tubes, and my kimax tubes came out to be dirt cheap... The Kim-Kaps were about 4x as much as my glass tubes, because i couldnt find them on ebay...

Ha I saw that Kim kap eBay page last night. I think I'm gonna go kim kaps (natural) with 25mmx150mm kimax test tubes. Not trying to bite your style Total, but the setup is golden lol. So the thing is, I have 2 cases (200 qty) of vacutainers. How many slants should each strain get? What does everyone else keep in the bank? I was thinking I could make agar slants with the culture tubes and use DWC for my vacutainers. Make like 2-3 agar slants and a dwc backup per strain?

So I tried to PC my red top vacutainers. Problem was that they are plastic and not glass vacutainers, so it got deformed. Don't know what purpose they'll serve me but I'll find something. My genetic library is pretty limited, so I know one case will be plenty for the culture tubes.

The Kim-Kaps were a deal and I bought those, but the person selling the culture tubes is trying to make money off of the back side with a high shipping price: "$43.45 Standard Shipping" so I passed on them. It really gripes me when people do that!
BTW, I always make at least 4 slants of each strain and renew 2x per year. If you have just 25 strains, that's 200 tubes per year minimum. Aloha has over 600 strains, imagine John's glass bill!

Both glass tubes and the Kim-Kaps are reusable... They should last you a long time...

Anyone got any good ideas as far as doing something with the vacutainers? At this point I might just create a spore giveaway or something. Having over 600 strains would be brutal, that's a lot of autoclaving. When I first got into agar I didn't understand how guys would go thru so many plates. I used to make only make 10 at a time. Now I make at minimum a full sleeve.

And now it's 190$ for 96 tubes, that is not a deal at all. You can buy those same tubes for .99c a piece, why would you pay double when buying a pack of 96?
