Growing gregariously under Madrone. Unfortunately most of them were far past their prime.

That's it! The odor should give it away and make it certain. There aren't many things that smell like them.
To find the fresher ones, learn to look for lumps in the ground where they haven't quite poked up yet.

Probably growing with tan oak rather than madrone.
Try this recipe:

Matsutake pairs very well with long pepper, which is a spice from Malaysia which has a taste/odor which is similar to Matsutake.

Well there are lots of Tan Oak in this park, but this particular area was almost all Madrone. They were even popping out from the base of the trees. In my book it's listed as growing with both so I don't really understand why you say that.

Bob you should check in the Pine Barrons and under Pitch Pine.
In your area it also grows under Eastern Hemlock.

I hunt under those trees a lot and haven't seen any but then again I haven't really looked through the duff for mushrumps. I did meet a older gent at one of my pitch pine spots saying that he'd found them in the area, but not at that particular spot.
