FLORIDA orchids?
    #17616004 - 01/26/13 08:35 PM (11 years, 3 days ago)

When do they start popping up and where? I absolutely love orchids but have not ever seen one in the wild. I googled fl orchids and came up with a page burnout spots to go look. Anyone have an idea where and when I should go? Anyone want to take me and my old lady out to see some wild? Worlds craziest flower after cannabis of course. Any info is apriciated or some of your own wild pictures.

Only in southern FL, they are there all year. You won't find them if you're not south of Orlando, the further south you go, the better your chances are.
Did you know that spanish moss is in the Bromeliad family? Meaning it's related to orchids

I've been in hiking central FL for 12 years, I've seen none. Plenty of air plants, and other parasitic plants, but never any orchids... not sure what to think about that. I'm very observant of all the fungi and plants as I hike, I photograph everything. I've honestly seen 0, in 12 years in Central FL.

Some of the best places to hike for neat plants are along the withalcoochee river, that runs through like most of central florida, but there are particularly good hiking areas in Dunellon, Hernando, and Inverness. One of my favorite hiking areas which I recently discovered and hiked like 20+ miles at, was in Homosassa, here is the sign so you know where I'm talking about:

The plant life and fungi life at this area are outstanding, even in winter time I was seeing some amazing shots, the habitat there is mixed, you can go from pine forest, straight into cypress swamp, into wet lands, into coastal habitats, etc. It's a nice chunk of land. Only thing I recommend is stayong off the trails. The trails are great but you see a lot more stuff making your own trails (don't get lost )

Yeah my old lady grew up on that river. She keeps telling me we need to go there. It's hard for us to hike off trails since we have a little one that either walks slow and not very far or I am forced to push his stroller over up grown roots and what not. Lol we like to hit the 100 mile horse trail since the horses have worn down the trail ti stroller capacity lol but they also want you to pay at the gate:sad:

Yeah young children make it difficult for sure, however they start to keep up round 4-5 years old. MY 5yr old daughter has completed 12mil hikes with me no problem, but I've been taking her hiking a long time, she has more experience than most

Have you seen the movie Adaptation?  You won't want to miss it. Your favorite flower is the star.  It's a really cool story.

Yeah that's what got me so interested in them. Then I read the orchid hunter. It's crazy not only do half of them have a symbiotic bond with trees but they all have bonds with certain bugs for pollination! The flower looks like the bug that pollinates it.
