perlite is not the only way but it is easy and cheap.
look around in any gardening center, it's there if you're in USA.

I got my perlite from Home Depot. It was sitting right next to the vermiculite in the gardening center. I don't think K-mart will have it. I only use a little and it keeps the baro. at 100%, its great when i go on vacations and cannot attend to my terrarium.

its usually not a good thing when you go to the garden shop and the clerk looks around and says, uuuuhhhhh it should be over there and points,( IS THERE A SUBSTITUTE FOR PERLITE ????)
