Christmas Lights?
    #781090 - 07/27/02 08:27 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Has anyone ever tried using christmas lights in their terrarium. Does it make enough light?

When it comes to lighting and mushrooms, it's not as much about quantity as it is quality. If I'm not mistaken, the lights need to be heavy in the blue spectrum and incandescent christmas lights are deficient in this area. If it were me, I would probably supply them with halogen, fluorescent, or natural light.

as far as i know, light is light. the mushies just need some kind of light to tell them to grow up instead of down. its best, if using perlite, to put a black a piece of a black trash bag or something under neath the cake (if doing cakes) so the light wont reflect fof the perlite and make the shrooms grow down.

AFOAF used christmas lights and they worked very effectively when they were placed a few inches above the saran wrapped lid, although when they were placed directly on top of the saran wrap they dried the cakes out from too much direct heat.
