Two more finds today

Thought this one might be Conocybe cyanopu. I find I am happier being optimistic until my hopes are dashed.

and if I were really lucky this one would be Gymnopilus aeruginosus:

No, Not Cononcybe cyanopus or Gymnopilus aeruginosus. Maybe #1 is a Marasmius species? Something like Marasmius rotula?

How did you come up with Marasmius rotula?
The pictures I am looking of rotula are all white with gills set far apart from each other very symmetrically.
The second picture is one that was dried out on the rotted trunk I found it on.
I am trying to figure out a system so I can come to the forum a little better equipped with a guess, but I suppose that only comes with time and practice.

going out and picking random mushrooms and hoping they are active, is not how you go about hunting psychoactive fungi. if i'm correct you live in the PNW. your season is pretty much over until spring.
there is tons of information on this site. i suggest you do your research.

Yeah sorry, it's not Marasmius rotula, I don't know what I was thinking. Anyone know what species that is? I'm pretty sure it's in Marasmius.

You are right, I just enjoy getting out I suppose. And I have been taking in as much info as I can. Its not like I post every shroom I see.
I am just going to end up cultivating them and observe them in the wild until i fall upon something that is definitive.

You just have to do alot of reading man, A field guide or something can help too. If you're looking for active mushrooms, try to learn the characteristics of Psilocybe, Gymnopilus, and Panaeolus.
If you're in the PNW like bloodworm said, The Gymnopilus aren't active there.

Well there were two things that made me think the first one was Conocybe cyanopu
1: It has darker gills that have kind of a deep brown purplish hue. 2. The description on Joust guid says that when they dry out they lighten up
The second one was foolish to post I suppose but it had characteristics like Even Casey'sphoto. http://www.shroomery.org/12463/Gymnopilus-aeruginosus
Also on the occurrence map there is some in Washington, and season is listed as Spring, fall, and winter.
I need to purchase that field guide but, im completely broke right now. 4 more days and that changes thank god.
I am also just anxious to try it all out. I find it incredible how much there is to actually look at once you start to open up your eyes.

Shit, my bad, I've always heard they weren't active in the west. bubbajk, you don't have to spend money on a field guide. The information is free and easily available on the internet.

You have heard that gymnopilus junonius (the big laughing gym) is not active. There are many in the PNW that are active, even G. spectabilis and G. junonius. These species are rarer out here than the lookalike G. ventricosus which is determined apart by the microscopic features and rarely, macroscopic features. This species is not active. I found G. spectabilis (possibly the same as G. junonius) this year which showed blue bruising and were bioassayed by a friend of mine which showed little but noticeable potency.

Your chances of matching random mushroom "A" to active mushroom "B" are very slim. Thats the "German Kahuna" type reality of finding active mushrooms. Research what type of actives grow in your area and under what conditions and you will have success.

To all poor folks (a topic I have some experience with) - check your local library(ies). SF libraries are a great resource. Also for less than the price of a new book you can join your local mushroom group - MSSF has a great library for members.
Anxious is not fun. Patiently have fun without anxiety. Impatience can make every mushroom you see bruise blue. Pretty soon everything around you, your friends, family, pets, body parts and morning cornflakes will be bruising blue before your eyes. If you are patient I can 100% guarantee you will find cubes in Canada and Azures in Antigua. You will also win the lottery. When you wake up you will study hard, hike many miles, and when you attain wisdom you will be a god like A-Rock.

I picked tons of mushrooms of all different types as many as I had time for, in every type of habitat and in any season for years, brought them home and ID'd them. That was a good way to learn a lot of common species, some rare ones and most useful I think is how to ID alot of mushrooms to genus bye sight, in the field. Not every mushroom bye far but doing this helped me to figure out when and where to look in general and got me interested in mycology as a whole, I now pick alot of edibles, but I have picked alot of actives too. It was years before I was confident enough in my skills to eat anything I picked. The first time i did was about 2&1/2 to 3 years after I started. The first Psilocybe cyanescens I ever found, but when I did I was confident in my ID skills an extremely rewarding experience.
