Super Bowl XLVII Picks

So, who's taking home the Lombardi Trophy this year?
Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49ers

Results after AFC/NFC Championships:
1. Psilocybinjunkie - 8 2. MadSeasonAbove - 7 3. Gayrey - 6 4. kendawg - 6 (where did you go??) 5. LiquidSmoke - 6 6. shLong - 6 7. grewya - 5 8. resonant111 - 5 9. zappaisgod - 5 10. consumesomeshrooms - 4 11. elax420 - 4 12. Senor_Doobie - 4 13. Bassfreak - 3 14. gzuf - 2 15. Penguarky Tunguin - 2 16. vetsinspandex - 2 17. KillerPicklez - 1 18. Madtowntripper - 1
Looks like it comes down to Psilocybinjunkie and MadSeasonAbove. Either Psilocybinjunkie wins or it will be a tie, assuming they pick opposing teams. I'm sure Psilo isn't interested in winning a supporter account, so I have a backup plan there. If you guys tie, I'll just get you both a little something.
I still encourage everyone to pick, as I'll do a final season total for guys that made regular season picks too.
As for me...I'm rooting for Coach Harbaugh.

I'm with you, Coach Harbaugh will come out victorious.
In all seriousness, I'm going with the Ravens.
We can debate back and forth why either team will win and there's plenty of good reasons on both sides of the fence. I personally just think it's the Raven's time, and I believe a defense that can shut down Tom Brady at Gillette and Peyton Manning at Mile High is capable of doing the same with Kaepernick.
Either way, amazing matchup, i'll be happy no matter who wins. Great stories leading up to this game.
I dont think I've been this excited over a Super Bowl (that didn't have my team playing in it) since Elway and Denver played against Favre and the Packers.

Ravens.
Hard to pick against the cinderella once they've made it this far. Plus i don't think Kaep has the balls and grit to pull it off by himself he'll need tons of help from special teams and turnovers.

Now that was a proper SuperBowl.

man i shouldn't have made fun of psilocybinjunkie for calling russell wilson a "midget" and a terrible pick back in april. cuz now his prediction skills are proving to be top notch!!!
as for my pick...49ers. can't wait for a scrambling rookie (essentially) quarterback to win the super bowl!!! so tired of hearing all this "you have to be a pocket qb to win" garbage.
pistol zone-read option is going to be the future of the NFL after this season. (especially with chip kelly coming into the league next year, with mike vick as his possible option qb!!!) the falcons wouldn't have been gashed on the ground last week if it wasn't for the zone-read offense. they played outside contain ALL DAY on kaepernick, thus opening up the interior lanes for gore and company. that's why that offense is so beastly...the d has to choose between the inside run or the outside run, cuz you can't stop both at once!!! love it...
zone-read option aint no fad like the wildcat folks, that shit is beastly.

the panthers didn't really use zone-read option this year from what i saw. if they did it was only a *very* minor part of the offense. the only newton game i saw was the panthers/eagles monday night game but newton was running a normal "pro-style" offense the entire time.
any coach that doesn't use zone-read or at least some shotgun spread with a scrambler qb is an idiot.

Ehh guess time will tell.
I think its pretty dumb to invest so much in a guy that is one hit away from a career ender ala RG3.
No doubting its effectiveness this year though.

well if it does become more popular (which i think it will) teams that run this would be wise to consider their QBs to be more like RBs in terms of career expectancy.
a guy like kaepernick, for example, you wouldn't expect him to have a 15 year career like a pocket passer. if you coaches were realistic they'd be like "well we can get a good eight years out of him, but with this offense it's worth it."
but all you have to do is draft another quarterback with scrambling ability. these guys are going to become hot commodities in the future. in the 2014 draft johnny manziel is going to be the #1 player off the board and he's going to be the "future prototype" for quarterbacks in this league.
i might be wrong, but that's my prediction, for what it's worth. scramblers are the future of the position if you ask me. pocket qbs will still around, but they will no longer be the "only type" of qb that coaches prefer.

I agree when you put it like that. Pocket passers will still be around and dominate but the old mold will be gone. Super Athletic cross sport players have been hugely successful. I think that read option will lose effectiveness in years to come though.
Calling it now. Manziel will be a bust in the NFL. dudes like 5'11-6'0 and 180 and has a noodle arm. You telling me I can be the prototypical NFL qb? Hes got a lot of developing that needs to be done.

Probably so, but he doesn't really have prototypical Size, Strength, or Speed, and is already getting in trouble with the law. Thats why i said he needs lots of development.

niners shud win
but i think the ravens will tho
the ravens are not as good as the pats or the niners, but they are hotter
each of the last few years the team that has won the SB has been the HOT team, not the better one, and i think the ravens will continue that streak
but as a whole throughout the whole season i wouldt even put the ravens in the top 5 cuz face it, they werent
having said that, fuck ray lewis and suggs. they are dirty (insert racit word here)'s and thats exactly how they act
Go niners

schlong wouldnt make the bet so we didnt do it
he couldnt commit to also not being able to post in his money thread, and whats the point of the bet if ur gonna have some gay stipulation like that? that instantly makes it an easier bet for him to make cuz he isnt betting as much as he shud be
so the bet was never made final
if it was I was going to contact a mod and see if he would even agree to our bet
sorry schlong wouldnt commit bc he totally woulda won

What fucking mod is gonna get involved in a bet? You'd just open a support ticket upon the ban anyway. Like they're able to ban based off of a bet in a thread. They, like us, have rules to follow. PJ wasn't gonna get involved in the wager match, what makes you think he'd be any different on a different sort of bet....especially one that involves his direct action to consecrate it.

The running QBs are going to get hurt more often. They are flashy and can certainly be successful but they get broken. A lot. They're going to get destroyed even more once defenses adjust properly. And they always do.

when was the last time a scrambling quarterback experienced a "career ending" hit? it seems like people are always throwing this argument around, but i don't see any evidence of it.
lots of scrambling qbs have gone on to have long, productive careers in the NFL. frank tarkenton, roger staubach, randall cunningham, mike vick, donovan mcnabb, john elway, steve young just to name a few.
to me it's more like "well we think they'll get hurt and they don't fit the prototypical model of qb...so let's just draft that 6'5 sloth with a laser arm instead"
i've seen more serious leg injuries from immobile pocket guys getting their legs crushed by defensive lineman than i have from scrambling qbs. remember brady a few years back?

Why do you put career ending injury in quotation marks? zappa didn't use that term, you did. You're putting words in his mouth.
The other word you put in his mouth was "scrambling". He's not talking about scrambling quarterbacks. He's talking about running quarterbacks. The only running quarterback on that list is Mike Vick. And he gets hurt all the time.
A scrambling quarterback is one who uses his legs to gain yardage when nobody's open or when the play gets broken.
a running quarterback is one who has running plays designed for him and where his running ability is often factored into the offensive gameplan

Maybe not career ending, but Vick was out for a while with his broken rib cage. RG3 was hobbled pretty bad this season.
I think it's give and take. Being a more mobile QB means you do have a higher risk of injury when you're out and about scrambling.
But being a mobile QB also means you have less risk getting injured while dropping back to pass.

i put "career ending" in quotes because people in general like to toss around that term with regards to mobile quarterbacks...how they're so susceptible to "career ending" hits and whatnot.
and i get your description between "scrambler" and "running" quarterback, but to be honest mike vick would be a "scrambler" too with that definition. he's never had an offense based on his running ability, he's just a quarterback who happens to be very, very mobile.
that's why the whole kaepernick, robert griffin read-option style is such a big deal. because it's the first time we've seen a quarterback's running ability be a HUGE part of the offense. you could argue denver did that last year with tebow, but the read-option stuff was a very MINIMAL part of their offense, really. it was mostly iform, ground and pound shit with the occassional read play thrown in there.
and if mike vick is the only "running qb" on my list...then i guess he's the only one in the history of the NFL. because those are the best mobile quarterbacks in the history of the game lol. to me, they're all just scramblers.

Ravens will take it all....they're on a roll right now. They just beat the two of the greatest quarterbacks in the past 20 years back to back weeks....
Boldin, Smith, and Pitta will make the difference offensively. Kaepernick will choke under pressure

Willis got burnt all day by Gonzalez, and hes an old boy with old legs. Pitta should own that matchup.
Davis was the only player on the niners that was super effective offensively for the Niners. I am seriously considering putting money on the Ravens for this one especially if the niners are favored by a lot, which i think they will be.

don't do it, the niners will win this game. that offense is simply way too much to handle.
and don't expect the niners d to give up as many big passes as they did against the falcons...they were facing essentially the best receiving core in the NFL with julio jones, roddy white and a hall of fame tight end.
it could be close, but the 49ers will win this game.

If he requested a forum ban from me then yes... I didn't enter the money bet pool cause I don't like making bets via forums and trying to enforce non legal things is hard.. If I had entered I would have won though. All I would have to do would be pick the same team as madseason and I couldn't lose my 1 game lead regardless of SB outcome.. When you make forum bets you have to rely on the honor system, if the person is someone who clearly isn't honorable, and obviously is not to be trusted, the fault lies with the people who choose to make such a foolish wager.
This is the sports forum used for making sports related topics, not topics about non sports professionals, who make long winded rants on topics in here. Threads about certain users should be in OTD, if anywhere. I realize he is unpopular etc, but a lot of you gave me horrendous amounts of crap for my picks against Denver etc. It goes with the territory, some sports fans are just bigger pains than others. I really don't wanna close this thread down and start giving out warnings and bans in the next one if people continue to drag it off topic.

i really hope they do, the pro bowl used to be somewhat watchable in the late 90's and early 2000's

don't do it, the niners will win this game. that offense is simply way too much to handle.
and don't expect the niners d to give up as many big passes as they did against the falcons...they were facing essentially the best receiving core in the NFL with julio jones, roddy white and a hall of fame tight end.
it could be close, but the 49ers will win this game.
Wow it seems like you are the only person who wants to talk about football in this whole damn thread.
Niners D got exposed pretty bad last week. They gave a guy 100 yards receiving in 10 minutes
Im not saying its going to be a blowout or anything I'm just saying I like the Ravens Odds.

yea, the niners pass D got shredded pretty bad last week. but the fact that they were able to overcome that and win the game...that's almost more impressive than coasting to an easy victory, you know? not only that, but i think it was the worst performance they had defensively all year and they still found a way to win...so you'd expect them to play better against the ravens next week.
like i said, it's probably gonna be a close game either way. i wouldn't be surprised if either team won, but i'm still picking the niners as the favorite.

I hear what your saying but I think ATL just dropped the ball. By all means the should have won. All they needed was 5 yards and Ryan made a terrible read, Gonzalez was wide open for the TD.
ATL didnt have the DLine and run support to stop SF, They had the speed to contain Kaep though. Ravens have both the Speed and Grit.
It will be close but 49ers are still too green IMO. The only advantage they have is at Tight end.

Neither the Packers nor the Falcons were able to stop that read option. Kaep has run it very well. Ravens will have to do a better job of disguising their defenses than the Falcons or Packers did.
Did anyone see any of the NFL Films stuff from this past week? Kaep looks ready. He's definitely the leader of that team.

its been done. Remember the 49ers couldn't beat the RAMS. 52 Suggs and Kruger are going to have to have good games. Crabtrees head isnt in the right place, Moss is old, that leaves Davis who i don't think they will be able to cover but pollard had a hell of a game last week.
I think the Ravens strategy will be to make Kaepernick beat them. The Falcons sold out to take away Kaepernick and we saw how that worked. The way Flacco is playing though SF is going to need to patch up those holes in the secondary and quick. I'm finally starting to get real stoked for this game.

9'ers secondary was definitely exposed early last week, and on that last drive as well. The one thing that strikes me abou both defenses is how they shut out their opponents in the second half. This will be a chess match of all chess matches. John Harbaugh was more noticeably a factor in the second half performance of his team than Jim was his.

I gotta say (without any real stats backing this up), I really don't think Flacco is a Super Bowl quality QB. It kinda upsets me that some greats (Marino for example) never seen one (or did he and not win?) and Joe gets a shot at one.
Kaep, meh, I have nothing against him...besides him raping my Packers. I think it'd be great if he won and ended up being a long term great QB. Imagine that, a handful of starts and a ring.
I'm kinda torn on whom I want to win. I usually go with my teams conference in sports (minus the Bears/Vikings and St Louis Cards), but I really don't know on this one. I guess this will be a good chance to watch totally objectively.

Guess not. One of my friends was trying to tell me that but i just googled it and Kaep is the overall leader. I dont really get how QBR works at all. I agree with you I have never been a fan or thought very highly of QBR.
Pass EPA for Flac is 19.4 (whatever the fuck that means) kaeps is 8.4 Run Epa for Kaep is 17.8 and its -.02 for Flac. I dont get how Running is a quarterbacks statistic.
Flacco has been gnarly in pressure situations the last 2 games though. Im definitely rooting for the dude because he gets so much negative press for some reason, and he beat the fuck outta my team. Kaep has a pair of legs on him forsure he just needs to learn how to throw better.

speaking of joe, it was joe montana and the san francisco 49ers who WALLOPED marino's dolphins 38-16 in his only super bowl appearance way back when.
i have an old VHS tape with highlights of all the super-bowls on it and i still remember that matchup vividly. the highlights made marino look like some second-rate qb, despite being one of the best of all-time. that's how bad the dolphins got beat that game.
i now understand why joe montana is considered by many to be "the best ever" even though statistically there are guys better than him. it's all these super bowl highlight films where he's outdueling guys like marino and leading 90 yard game-winning drives. don't think the dude EVER had a bad game in the super bowl.

1984, Dan Marino was on fire, but the 9ers were better.

They should just have the defenses play each other in a game of rugby.

I am picking the 49'ers.
Not that it matters.
