Turning Into Your Parents
    #1758316 - 07/29/03 02:48 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

My mom told me that when she was younger, she would always say "I'll never be like my mom and dad, I'll never be like them!" But she ended up turning into them anyway, which she admits with regret.

Now I'm afraid that the same thing will happen to me. Is there any way to survive this horrible curse?

IMO, the phenomenon of "turning into your parents" is due to a combination of two basic things:

-Genetics. Ultimately, you share a similar lot in life as your parents due to similar DNA.

-Upbringing. Those bastards have been brainwashing you from day 1, throughout your most impressionable years. Sure, they meant well (probably), but they've set a massive roadblock in your path to individuality.

Ultimately, though, the person you become is up to you. Your genetics are unchangeable (as far as we know), but your upbringing you can choose to either accept or reject. I recommend stripping all your thoughts, beliefs, and values down to their core, examining the validity of that core (and possibly changing it or rejecting it entirely), and rebuilding from there.

True,true..
I had few rare cases in which I found myself acting exactly like my mother, and it really pissed me off.. i was like "oh my fuckin god! im turning into my mom!! AHHHHHHH!!!"
it was scary indeed.

but its only natural since thats the daily education u recieved ever since u remember yourself, and thats what you know. the smart thing will be to be able to think for yourself, and to get inspired from other sources so when you'll be a parent yourself, you'll be able to keep only the good stuff without also imitating the bad stuff..
so at the end, you'll be a much better parent.

I've heard that many times but I wonder why it is accepted so readily, is one's own parents so lacking that the thought of becoming in any way like them so terrible? Granted so in some cases but not all, I'm 37 years down the road and I am in some ways like my parents and I'm very glad of that, my father was always good to his word and strong in the face of adversity, my mom had a great sense of humor and was a generous soul. If I could carry these and other facets of my parents in me till the day I die I would be happy to do so.

If I end up following the behavioral patterns of my parents, I'll kill myself. Simple as that.

be watchful of your most automatic of social and general functions, and change them accordingly when you realize you ARE your parents.

This is exactly what I have done... Basically a rebirth, character restructuring. It is rough, and you really have to do a lot of work, but it is for the better. Imagining trying to go through life with all of the same security hangups... they seriously limit how far you can go in this life.
Rebirth is great, trust me. hehe
Peace.

yeah, I think the whole turning into your parents phenomenon has a lot to do with getting wise as you age. When you're young, you are fairly ego-centric compared to a person of 50 years. But as you get older, your egocentricity starts to wane, (an ego that was built upon being different from your parents) and you start to realise that...well...maybe my parents arent COMPLETE idiots, and you are able to adopt the positive elements of your parent's lifestyle.

im sure this especially rings true once you have children. You can examine how your parents raised you, differentiate what you think was done good or bad, distance yourself from the bad parts, and adopt the good parts.

like...Im not gonna be a drunken bastard like my dad!

or

Yeah, Im gonna raise my child to be strong and hard-working!

I dont think you can escape the genetics, but the part of your parents that was socially conditioned has no power over you unless you allow it.

Genetics are funny though.. they are like processes than can be appled to totally different situations.

like my grandpa was a big adventurer of the external world, and Ive always felt the need to explore and see the other side of things as well though in very different ways.

i think i get my sense of philosophy from my dad, he is always taking huge things and summing them up like to the overall nature of how it works... I find I have to do that just to function in the world without going crazy thinking about it too much.

i strive to recognize and build on the positive characteristics, but I am also evaluating the ways in which i believe my parents and grandparents are nearsighted. they have certain ways about them that ill be DAMNED if i ever follow.

We're continuing their work...
Things that they had to struggle to find out, naturally occur to us, it seems. We never find it out, since we know them through the role of them raising us, but most of the time, our tendencies and personalities really reflect theirs at our age... It's crazy.
Peace.

I have that thought too

like my parents eventually hit this mental road-block somewhere , and they just sort of had to wrap up their story, and then it gets passed to me and I have to keep the story going and see what else I can resolve.

Yep, there is a certain point that they can't go any farther, and have kids.... That's probably why it is really hard for someone that has a kid at 16 or 18 to make it too much farther.. and why say business executives moving up the ranks don't have kids until they are 30-40 yrs old... I myself, I am going to get somewhere before it is time for me to pass my developments on to someone else to continue...
Peace.
