Greenhouse Advice Needed
    #17579732 - 01/20/13 03:38 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I currently have 94 PF tek jars, 8 WBS jars, and 14 rye berry jars, some of which are almost done colonizing and I have nowhere to fruit them!

Currently I have a metal shelving unit (36"w, 54"h, 14"d) wrapped in plastic with zipper door etc. Pretty standard build. Anyways, I'm currently working on the humidity / FAE and have some questions as far as what to use.

Can I get your guys' opinion on these two items? Given I've never used a greenhouse before, I'm pretty unsure as to how many CFM the fan needs to be and some other details.

This fan

This fogger

These will be set up with a 5 gallon bucket with two 2" pvc pipes running from the bucket to the top of the greenhouse.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks :mushroom2:

I would suggest using a smaller fan. 50cfm is probably plenty maybe overkill. Why not just use one 4" duct?

I thought the same thing myself. I took this GH build from TheDeathryder (click to see the same GH I'm building) and when I was discussing it with him I asked the same question. He said it was simply because two smaller pieces of PVC are easier than one larger one.

Thanks for the advice, though.

That fogger has kind of a high price and no reviews.
I'm using a 25$ one and its still kickin.
Good luck.
Personally, I don't use any fans. Just a modified humidifier with a hose that I snagged off an old vacuum.
The fogger sits in a tub of water on the bottom and the humidifier hose sits in there too.
Both are on a timer that makes them run about 10 minutes every hour or sometimes two.
When the fog starts, the powerful blasts of air from the humidifier blast the fog up.
It was a cheap humidifier but I siliconed a bleach bottle on top and the hose to that.

There are so many ways to set up a greenhouse. Just mess with it until you (& the mush gods) are happy

It's all about the mush gods... they can be so picky. I actually looked around some more and was looking at this one. Still not a $25 fogger, but I couldn't find one that cheap that looked somewhat decent. Maybe I don't know what I'm looking for. I found a relatively cheap fan controller that I could use to dial down that fan as necessary. Given how I built my GH I don't think it will get nearly enough FAE without a fan.

As always, thanks for the advice :mushroom2:

Yeah I didn't mean to say the one I have won't crap out either but so far,so good. Experimenting is always the fun part. Especially when it works out

All you really have to do is leave at least one slit cut from bottom to top for fresh air exchange.  Misting the substrates will generally be all you need to do for humidity due to the evaporating moisture.

I hate to see mechanical stuff in growing where it can be avoided by passive techniques.

The brf cakes should be fruited in a shotgun terrarium, as they do poorly in mini-greenhouses.

My experience with cakes in greenhouses is that they tend to get drenched by the ultrasonics.  Fruiting cakes in a greenhouse can be done, but I would spawn those cakes to trays if I were in your shoes.

I've read of people having success with BRF cakes in greenhouses, but then again I've also read it can be hard to dial it in for the BRF cakes. My logic was that if I maintain around 100% RH, good temps, and good lighting I'll be fine. I'll take your advice though and leave them out of the greenhouse. That means I have a lot of holes to drill in a lot of bins

For the sake of knowledge, why don't BRF cakes do well in greenhouses?

In a 100%RH environment, the moisture on the cakes has nowhere to evaporate to, thus denying you one of the most important factors in pinning.

Makes sense to me. Why then when you use trays does this not cause problems?

Probably because they're not exposed.
Overwetting is one of the reasons I have the fog creeping up only occasionally from the bottom.
It's definitely fun to play with the balance man, you can make those cakes work out :pierre1:

This is probably my last run with cakes so I'm not too excited about the idea of making so many SGFCs. I know I can stack them and cut down on how many I'd need to make but it would be legit to be able to make the greenhouse work

You can always crumble the cakes and use them for bulk as if they were WBS.

Sent you a PM Deathryder. On the FAE note... I built the GH pretty tight. Only real spots for air flow is at the bottom of the door and a small area in the bottom with screen to allow water to drip out the bottom if needed. I suppose this could provide some FAE though.

As previously stated, with cubes you're more concerned with air movement.  My design incorporated a more powerful fan system because Oysters require MUCH more fresh air.  Are there holes in your shelves, or are they solid?  How tight fitting is the plastic cover?

Plastic cover is on pretty tight with plenty of duct tape so it's sealed up well. This can be easily fixed though. The shelves are like wire shelves basically for lack of better words to describe them. If a cake were to sit directly on them, most of the cake would be exposed to air.

You'll get plenty of circulation through those shelves.  I wouldn't be worried about FAE at all, even with a small fan.
