spawn humidification
    #1757800 - 07/29/03 12:02 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

If the colonized spawn has a casing layer does is still need to be put in a fruiting chamber? Will perlite be too much humidity? I have seen some pictures where it looks like the spawn is made in the bottom of a tubberware. Is this only with large amounts of spawn? If covered with plastic or lid what happen if the fruitbodies start hitting the top. Is there enough moisture in the casing layer to render the lid unneccesary at that time? Thanks

Is the casing layer colonized? You can use some perlite, but def not as much as you would with cakes. I lightly outline the fruiting chamber with perlite, works great.

i never really put a casing layer item that is in a closable container in a fruiting chamber, unless it doesnt have enough room for the mushies to grow inside properly. If that is the case let it colonise, and THEN put it into the fruiting chamber after so the mushrooms can stretch out enough.

but one could spawn in a tubberware with no perlite provided there was enough room for fruitbodies. How thick would the spawn need to still leave room for air exchange? even with a bubbler attached?

errrr whell...i would imagine for 1 1/2 inches of spawn...go forlike 1 inch casing? i dunno, the mycellium on top would bring air down to the bottom growth wouldnt it?

yes, but would suffecient O2 be brought into the tub via a bubbler or holes poked in lid?

yes but can spawn in large containers be fruited without perlite?

yes exactly, just wondering why some smaller containers are fruited in perlite chambers. Also when is the time to add the casing layer, i.e. should the poo/compost be completely thick white seeing little poo, or should it just have rhizomorphic growth over the entire tray? Just browsing the facts and saw couple pictures of overlay but that was overlay in the casing layer not the colonized spawn substrate so no clear on exactly when the time is? thanks

I am kind of curious myself on that one! I would imagine you would want full colonization of poo layer...but i am unsure, anyone else know?
