Is hunting in the winter in western Washington a waste-o-time
    #17572314 - 01/19/13 09:57 AM (11 years, 1 month ago)

Yesterday was my first time foraging for shroooms, I had a good time and found some un-actives.

I am wondering if I am wasting my time looking for actives when the temperature regularly drops below 40 and there is a frost every other morning.

I have observed species on the guide that are close to year round and do grow in winter, so i know they must be out there.  But,  the ground is still plastered with leaves from fall and I stick to looking around trees and such. Once in a while I'll clear an area with a stick around the trunk if the area looks "mushroomy".

Is searching for mushrooms  like hunting octopus? Instead of looking for the actual octopus you look for indicators of their home.

I seek out old rotted up trees, anything with lots of moss on it, and dark rich earthy dirt with visible mycelium (I think thats what it is called). The white stringy stuff that basically holds the earth together.

I have been reading the forums and will continue to do so. I think this is a hobby I could really get into and continue into old age. I promise continue to due diligence and read the forums, but I am looking for a couple shortcuts.

It's pretty late to find anything active in the PNW

Or early....

Winter is not a good time to search for psychoactive mushrooms in your area. The gulf coast may be the only place they consistently grow throughout the winter months in the U.S., but even here it can be hit or miss depending on rain.

  :boo:

In a sick kind of way it makes me want to find one even more since it would be a rarity. The white buffalo of mushroom hunting.

What kind of average temperatures (high and low) are we looking for? From what I have seen is lows of 40 and highs of 70.

You could always look every time it rains and in between to increase your odds. I have to believe there is a few somewhere out there. But most likely not worth your time unless you just like the outdoors like me I love to be in the woods.

My logic says when fost on the ground in the mornings, I'd say there would be no mushrooms in though places.
