3 people shot at gun show -negligent discharge by police officer - OOPS!

RALEIGH -- Law enforcement officials have confirmed a shooting at the Dixie Gun and Knife Show at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds Saturday afternoon.

Agency spokesman Brian Long says a 12-gauge shotgun discharged while its owner, 36-year-old Gary Lynn Wilson, of Wilmington, unzipped its case for a law enforcement officer to check it at a security entrance.

Three people were injured when the gun went off, officials said, including a retired Wake County Sherriff's deputy working the show.

Fifty-year-old Linwood Hester, of Durham, and 54-year-old Janet Hoover, of Benson, were transported to WakeMed Hospital. Officials said they are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Deputy Jake Alderman, 54, of Wake Forest, was treated at WakeMed North Healthplex and has been released.

The gunshot also shattered the window in the main hallway leading into to big room, witnesses said.

The Dixie Gun and Knife Show was shut down after the incident. The event is typically scheduled at the fairgrounds about four times a year.

The event drew a huge turnout Saturday as just about all gun businesses have seen a spike in sales following recent moves by the Obama administration to step up gun control since a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school just over a month ago left 20 children and six adults dead.

The Dixie Gun and Knife Show will continue as planned on Sunday, Jan. 20. There will be no private gun sales allowed, and personal guns will not be allowed on property. Gun sales will be allowed only by licensed dealers within the confines of the Jim Graham Building.

At the request of State Fairgrounds officials, the Wake County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. There is no information available on pending charges.

The comments say the chamber discharged when the cop was installing a zip tie.

20 rich white children die & a shotgun misfires at a gun show because the idiot kept it loaded and now our guns and ammunition are all susceptible to bans. Little Republican martyrs.

I didn't read where "negligent discharge by police officer" happened.

Sounded like an officer wanted to check it and the idiot owner had the fail when unzipping the case.

Where in the article did it say "negligent discharge by police officer" as your thread title suggests?

Found this interesting...
Quote:

Visitors are supposed to allow security officials to check in weapons, Keith said, but Wilson removed the gun from its case before personnel had a chance to handle it. The shotgun was laying flat on a table when it discharged.

"I want to emphasize that this was an accident," Keith said. "At the time, no employee, no officer had inspected that gun."

guns dont go off when you unzip the case they're in, cop had to have touched
the trigger with one in the pipe, this story clearly doesnt give us the whole
picture, that's a cop fail because he obviously didnt make the gun safe

so in fact it wasnt the cops negligence in handling but the cop's negligence in doing his job in general

"accidental discharge" has happened here multiple times during gun shows. Never witnessed in person, but I've heard it from a few people attending the shows during inspection. (no one was injured in these instances as far as I know)

When will people learn to leave their guns unloaded when entering a gun show? It baffles me...

When i worked at taco bell some years ago this off duty cop was in line to get food and shit, as i was the cashier, high out of my mind.. hear a pop.  And im just half nodded out like 'wait, what?.'  well it turned out the cops gun popped off in the lobby, put a big silver dollar sized circle in the floor.  Some shrapnel hit a teenager in line, and fucked up  an old mans hearing a bit.

What did the off duty cop do?  He dipped the fuck out.  All he received was a demotion, so he just decided to quit the police force.  I'm good friends with his niece and apparently that shit has happened in his shop before too.

Good times.  eh.

I can't believe these people.  This is gun safety 101.  Treat every weapon like it is loaded and only point it where you want it to shoot and never at a person.  What rubes.

A patron went to show a dealer his firearm Inside the gun show and the loaded weapon fired accidentally. How the fuck did he get into the show with a loaded weapon? Every show I've attended they check and secure every firearm with a zip tie.

Negligence on all accounts

They sure do. So as Pris pointed out. Negligence on both parts.
