spawning verm/brf*UPDATE*
    #1740983 -

is it possible to just take some chunks of colonized brf... and put more steralized verm/brf around it, would it colonize everything else???

for example: i take one 1/2 pint cake and break it up into a casing, then make a jar like normal and steam it and everything, then instead of innoculating it with a syringe and waiting 2-3 weeks, you can just pour it over the casing and let it incubate.. that would cut down a lot of days and also let you put more cakes into there thus having more nutrients for bigger yeilds...

I doubt this would work. BRF has a very high nutrient content and would most likely be overrun with contaminants before the spawn could grow into it. If you want to cut down on the time it takes to grow, use grains and G2G, then spawn to poop or compost.

well, i just took what looked like two cakes that didnt even germinate and looked into the middle of it and it was almost completely colonized... so im gonna try this with this cake.. ill let you all know later how it went...

good for you, but before you go trashing people's ratings understand that when you ask questions like this you will get opinions. in my case i wouldn't risk losing a colonized cake to try out something i wouldn't get much return on, relatively speaking.

hey man i don't want to argue, i was just trying to help. if you inoculate the second jar at the same time as the first then it would take roughly just as long to colonize, with the same amount of work. you just don't have that extra risk.

the reason not to do what you suggested is because it's essentially a bulk tek without the bulk (and pastuerization). i'm logging an experiment that's being done where STERILIZED poo is being used instead of PASTUERIZED. pastuerization allows natural bacteria/enzymes and what not to survive and protect the substrate while it is being colonized with the spawn.

in your case, and in the experiment, sterilization has been done(most likely because of a convenience need). thus there is no natural protection and you must be very careful of introducing contaminants. the hypothesis in the experiment i'm overseeing is if you use a greater amount of spawn per unit of bulk substrate, will the mycelium colonize fast enough to beat out all contaminants?

in your case you're using a 1:1 ratio of spawn to substate, much greater than mine (1:4.3 i believe). my worry was that BRF is so high in nutrients would it even matter? either way it's live and learn.

well for those of you who doubted me... heres a pic...

for this casing i put a small layer of verm on the bottom... then some of the cakes that i had thought were spent and wouldnt work on the bottom... i cut them into squares and layer it... then i put 2 half pint cake substrate into the casing and covered it with tin foil to keep moist.... this is what it looks like 4 days later... almost 2 cakes got colonized IN 4 DAYS!!!! this have saved me a lot of time, spore solution, and i get to choose how much substrate i want in any casing without having to innoculate a ton of jars!!! later today im adding another cake... then after thats fully colonized ill probably add a verm casing and ill be done...

ill keep on updating in the future if you guys want... please make any comments you have about this... good or bad...

p.s. I didnt ask for opinions. My question should be answered with facts and personal experiences which you didnt have. facts: -Bacteria Spores/Contamination takes a couple days to germinate and spread. -already colonized substrate will spread a lot faster than contamination -you get more in return, u can colonized one cake and instead of using two colonized cakes you can use one and put uncolonized material into it and get 2 in 1 really...

you asked for opinions:

houshroom, you were very diplomatic. that was downright rude of him.
Johnny, I put your chances of success at <0.1% without some quick and extreme good luck.
