Canadian Shrooms

Has anyone found shrooms in Southern Alberta? I've been looking all over forests and horse ranch's and can't find any actives. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I would really like to start finding actives because the whole idea of mushroom hunting and finding mushrooms that take me to space really interests me.

Do a search for it on the threads, I'm sure you'd find something.

And hopefully you'll learn a few things about mycology along with being sent to space on a mushie-rocket :P

I'm pretty new to the thread, and I started posting because I was excited about finding active mushrooms, also. But now after reading a lot of the posts, having a few trips to the woods and finding awesome specimens, none of which were active, I've found that mushrooms in general are very awesome and intriguing, even if they don't send you into outerspace

Good luck in your hunts. I haven't found anything yet, but I'm having fun in the process

I looked over all the faqs and the finding section, but I still can't find any. What areas should I be looking through? Coniferous forests, horse pastures, deciduous forests? Any more info would be great.

Those grapes I ate must be active grapes.. I think I'm seeing double! O.o

From what I gather, if you're looking for actives, your best bet would be piles of horse manure. I've seen a lot of threads about active mushrooms being found growing from that source. I've also seen a lot of success stories with woodchips and dense, humid, forested areas. Look down by the creekbeds and embankments with fallen, rotting trees.

1-3 days of rain seems to yield a pretty hearty growth rate, so I'd check areas after a heavy rainstorm. Be sure to bring bug repellant too, those mosquitos are a pain :frown:

I'm still itching from my first hike

Hope that info helps, good luck. And if you find anything, you better post or the mushie faerie will come and snatch all your goodies and give them to.. um.. ME! :nut: yeah, that's it... *ahem*

Well, Calgary has been really really dry lately. No rain in weeks, almost a month or two. So when it rains I hope to find swarms of pan subbs in a horse ranch by my house.

I'm in the dark area in this picture, and I will most likely buy an identification book for the fall season, unfortunately for me a lot of people go picking for pine mushrooms during the fall here, lots of people out in the woods solely for money :frown:

Well, I live in the prairie. But there is a provincal park in my area with a horse pasture minutes from my house, so when it rains I think I'm going to check it out. Hopefully it should pop up hundreds of pan subbs. If it does, I'll post some pics if I can.

by the looks of it, pretty much all of Canada is in a heat wave right now. It was 32 C in the Fraser Valley today and it hit 40 C in other parts of the province. It is supposed to be seriously hot for atleast another week. There won't be any mushrooms for awhile yet. On my hikes the last couple weeks all is to be found is ganoderma or shelf fungi.
