Rye grain question.
    #1737877 - 07/22/03 10:35 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

This is the first time I've tries grain and I have a question about water content. I soaked the grain foe 36-48 hours and loaded it into the quarts to pc it. I pc'd it for an hour then knocked them up after they cooled. I am using tyvek over a quarter inch hole in the lid. It has only been a few days but the grain looks really dry. There is no moisture inside the quarts at all. Is this right or should it be alittle damp in there? Does anyone have a pic showing how the grain should look in the jars? Thanks in advance.

If you choose to just put tyvek on the 1/4 inch hole and tape it down.. what kind of tape would work?

Yeah, you could check out Anno's other post in advanced cultivation... I believe it's under experiment results or something. Just search for anno, within the past few weeks. That explored using boiling as a method for grain preparation, it was very accurate.

Thanks again Anno. My jars look like the last pic but it has only been 1 day since innoc. Maybe I am being paranoid but this is the first time for me. They just look too dry. Would adding some water hurt? Maybe 10cc a quart. Of course the water would be sterile. Your thoughts please Anno.

Don't get me wrong,I know this takes time and that's cool with me. I'm not in a hurry. This is the first time working with grain and it looks really dry. I just don't want to fail for something that I could correct now. So if there is no growth after say 6 days would more water help then?

Let's try this again. Eleven jars rye grain, 7 days without any signs of growth. Do I add water to the jars of not?

I've just started my first rye jar and did the same process you did.Mine are going good.I had the same concern.I thought it was too dry.But it's not just let it go it'll be fine.
