Scarab74, that sounds real tasty.  The best lasagna I ever had was veggie.  Like eggplant, roasted squash, roasted cauliflower, and sliced chanterelles.  Mmm Mmmm

I miss summer so I went to the store and bought some zucchini, roma tomatoes, yellow peppers, and eggplant. I made a wonderful vegi dis of eggplant, zukes, peppers, and onions in tomato sauce with lots of garlic, fresh basil, and kicked up with some hot peppers.

 at the thought of buying zucchini.

It was pretty good over pasta.

I know I'm not the only one here who has noticed the incredibly quick rising cost of foods at the store?

Growing your own and putting it by is going to become more important I think.

Rainwater collection, grey water reclamation, gardening and composting should be mandatory education

We belong to an organic produce buying club.  I drop $90/month on fresh produce from the mainland for the two of us exclusive of the rest of our groceries from the supermarket.  We eat what we can then preserve the rest.  We grow what we can in containers on the deck of the apartment, but without an acutal yard or the means to irrigate effectively, our output is sadly limited.  Especially for a city with a 12-month growing season (if you can find some shade in August).

I agree, there should be a much greater emphasis on creating and maintaining sustainable communities.  This includes planning for community gardens, reducing needless consumption of fuel and materials, and recycling.

  That's the right idea!

I made bean soup with a ham hock and a shoulder blade steak in it.  Used Bob's 13 bean mix

no, you're not the only one. If congress didn't pass a farm bill last year milk would be above $8 a gallon. and once obama does something about immigration that will also raise food prices since migrant workers won't have to work for $2 a day with no benefits, the other side of that is that there will be more legitimate taxpayers to pay into what we enjoy as society. I welcome that change.

Back on SUbject.

I made a Mediterranean braised chicken and mushroom dish (white wine braise with thyme garlic shallot)

and stuffed crimni mushrooms (bacon, shallot, garlic, marjoram, butter, millet)

and drank a Moscow moose tail, Luksokowa vodka, hansen's ginger ale, lemon twist, topped up with Newman's limeade.

Tonight: fried zucchini coins with marinara, mashed sweet potatoes with a little cayenne, and bacon-wrapped filet (for my husband) and veggie "stake" for me with fresh baked bread and homemade cholcolate chip walnut banana bread for dessert.

Any suggestions for my kabocha squash? Never cooked one but it reminds me of an acorn squash.
