Lab Agar
    #17545246 - 01/14/13 01:30 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Seems as though I may have some access to lab agar: HPC (heterotrophic plate count agar) and R2A (Reasoner's 2A agar). What I'd like to know is if these two types of agar would fare well in growing mycelium. What do you guys think?

Off the top of my head I would say the r2a is the better shot.
It contains more of the basic needs of the inoculate.
I don't have any personal experience with either,
yet I lean toward the understanding it is more for growing bacterium.
The r2a seems to be a better option in that it contains a larger spectrum of nutrients.
The pH of both are about the same just basic of neutral.
M-(hpc) is at 7.1 pH+/-0.2%
R2a is at 7.2pH+/-0.2%
I believe common fungi agar are more acidic, in the 5-6 pH range.
My best suggestion would be to try a couple of each and run a few recipes you are comfortable with at the same time and compare results side by side.
Make sure to keep a log of dish numbers or names (I usually run in numbers by color of marker).
I will usually use a photo log of everything for better research after I am done.
Just play with extra collected genetic material and keep track of what it does.
It never hurts to experiment, more so when you find out something you thought was impossible before.
I ran out of agar one night. I remembered we had brown rice with dinner! Put some in a mortar and pestle to make a paste. The paste was smeared lightly onto a dish then inoculated. After a short stint in the incubator there was un contaminated growth. I did dispose of that, yet I proved to my girlfriend that they were indeed stronger than she had believed.
If you do try, post your findings please.
