Forgot to shake your jars after inoculation....had to point that out
Never used felt but if its anything like micro pore tape, it'll work any kind of porous material .02-.03 in micron size will do.

@Tmethyl Are those lids the plastic variety with a square of black felt attached with silicon? How big is the hole that the felt covers?
I've had a control jar sitting with a disk of firm felt held by the ring for almost two months now. Still looks clean.

Hybrid, shaking after spore inoculation is not beneficial, I shook after inoculation for nearly a year before I learned this. You'll get better results not shaking:
Quote:
Tmethyl said: Shaking after spore inoculation is not a good idea, mycelium doesn't just grow from a spore. Spores first send out hyphae (a single strand of mycelium-like growth) this hypae needs to connect with the hypae of another spore in order to start creating mycelium. This is called spore mating. You want the spores close for this to happen, spreading out the spores lowers the chance that each spore will mate. Once the jars have about 30% of the jar colonized, then you shake to spread the mycelium.
Spore germinating a hypae, then searching for a mate:

Moss, it's a 1/4" hole underneath the felt. Plastic lids, square of felt attached with silicone, correct.

That's about a 10 times smaller than any contaminant we need to deal with. You probably meant to say .2 to .3 micron.
Don't use felt. It will expand in the pressure cooker so you don't know what the micron size you end up with. It might work a time or two but is not going to deliver results time and time again through hundreds of uses and re-uses the way synthetic filter disks will. RR

Is it possible to inoculate through the felt/is it self-healing?

No. You dont want to stick a needle through any filter material except dry verm layers.

Not even poly-fill? I've read quite a few people that say they either stick it right through or on the side of the hole where their poly-fill is.

Yes, polyfill is ok to inoculate thuru as well...just make sure the needle is not red hot when you stick it in, or it will melt to the needle and you will end up pulling it out with the needle.

QFT.
Moreover, you don't even actually know the pore size to begin with!
That said, in case you're still inclined to try it, you should know that the material most people are actually talking about using is not felt. Felt is made from wool. This material is made from polyester and is sold under brand names like "EZ Felt" or "Friendly Felt" or "Eco Felt."

"Craft felt" is another one.
