Although one can certainly adopt a perspective on life that can make finding happiness in unpleasant situations much easier, there are still certain situations where merely adopting a different intellectual perspective will do little to improve one's bliss. If you disagree, I'll be happy to provide a set of restraints and some white-hot needles to stick under your fingertips and let you show just how blissful you truly are.

Right, I'm not disagreeing with your post. I'm just curious where one draws the line as to what is a situation that can be improved with a mere shift in mental perspective and one that can't.

hard to say. Have you seen the images of the vietnamese monks setting themselves fire during the war?

Yeah. I don't think they were experiencing bliss, though... more like they just believed so strongly in their cause that their death was more important than their current suffering.

But it certainly illustrates the point that we have more control over our mental state than we often give ourselves credit for.

I'm not sure there is a limit. There are Buddhists monks that are documented to have used their minds to heat up freezing cold towels put on their bodies. The mind is a powerful thing, I'm sure there are people out their who have learned to disconnect from physical pain.
