Should Demonology be Taught in Schools/Universities?
    #17533654 - 01/11/13 04:32 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

There are so many books out there about Demonology, I question if perhaps this another study that should be created as an elective in schools/colleges. There are classes in Mycology, Entomology, Herpetology, why not Demonology?

I believe colleges with courses in theology might cover demonology at some point but haven't actually taken one.

it is a non-scientific, and non-honest ology

all the other ologies are independently testable.

it would be a bad precedent.

Should it be included in a class that teaches Witchcraft? I think Witchcraft should be taught in some form, because many of the apothecary things are in what is known as "alternative medicine" some of the potions do in fact work for healing.

But they work because of properties in the ingredients. Not because you lit candles and made it during a full moon.

I took a cultural anthropology class back in college called "magic, witchcraft, and religion". It was interesting. It was the first time I ever heard of San Pedro cactus. This was back in the mid 90's. She showed us a documentary about it's use.

What about Angelology. Could this perhaps be a possible field of study that could be brought into schools as an elective class?

Why not.... I mean go to Amazon and type in Angelology or Demonology and look at all the books. I seriously think Demonology would be a better route because It has so many facets. Types of Demons, possession, and exorcisms. So why couldn't a class be created? Demonic possession has been talked about since the beginning of humanity. The Sumerians talked about possession and they felt that many of the illnesses were caused by Demons.

I can't really say if Angelology would be a great class because there just isn't enough to talk about. The class could go into the types of Angels Archangel, Seraphim, Throne, etc but to me Angels seem fictitious because they stem from the 3 Abrahamic monotheistic Religions. Islam Christianity and Judaism. Angels are not found in Sumerian Religion Egyptian religion, Hinduism, and Buddhism. But all of these religions have wicked and evil spirits. "demons"

Your speaking in terms as though they are proven real entities. That's gonna be a tough sell to colleges you know since 95% of non bat shit crazy/religious peoples lives aren't affected or have experience with them. Look on amazon about books on big foot or dragons or fairies there is quite a lot! With no tangible proof but instead faith, that's why there's a minuscule following. Education and faith in the unseen are generally not hand in hand.

I see where your coming from, but people in general always place the name Demon on a evil spirit. Haunted places are said by many ordinary people to be where some Demons reside. No one really talks about Faeries or Bigfoot or the Lochness Monster... These creatures don't have the fame that Demons have. I have never read about Faeries or Elves possessing people..

That's all because of Christian hysteria. Demons and angels are used as threats and hope givers for the followers.

If there was a classed called Demonology 101 would you take it? Learn all about the Demons in various Grimoires and Demons like the Succubus and Incubus?

Solely for an entertaining elective possibly but not because I would actually believe or utilize a single word of it.

There are classes on all kinds of folklore at colleges. Demonology is a special class for Roman Catholic seminary though, a bit of an embarrassment to them in these modern times, but they still do practice exorcisms and believe these things.

Yeah, then one can come out a super nerd of nerdness +1, proudly wearing the Cloak of Eternal Virginity and play with their magic wand all day

I'm still waiting for OP to suggest some potential jobs that might come from teaching Demonology at university level. I suspect the Potterology major would be useful for the same field

Well you could become an astound Tarot Readed or Rune Reader... Know one really knows what entity or spirit is talking through the cards. The same goes for Pendulum readings. Ouija boards are the most dangerous out of the divinatory items. People have become possessed from using spirit boards.

A tutorial would be nice too. I'll boldly go and risk possession to test this fine theory  :laugh2:

A time like now would be perfect if you were in a position to take on those that are turning on western medicine.  People that no longer trust modern medicine are overflowing into something.  In my own case, it is better if you know.  Not that you don't and treat it like a joke.  And not that you don't and offer meds.  And, not that don't period.

Lifetimes are spent on the other side of the fence.

So...  Just one person being educated is a help.  This could be an emerging market.  And instead of a confused paradigm working out its problems on us like guinea pigs or lab rats there would be REAL understanding.  Understanding that parallels the experiences.  Not something in contrast to what is experienced claiming that it is not happening as you are witness to it.
