Ice Fishing

I went ice fishing for the first time. And it was the best fishing experience in my life. 11 Mile Reservoir in Colorado. Didn't catch anything but you could see straight down to the bottom in your shanti. And it's fucking cool how toasty the shanti gets even when its -20 outside. Saw some big ass fish and hooked 1 but failed getting it through my auged hole lol.
The sound of the ice cracking is semi majestic; how at first it's a bit intimidating and by 1/2 way through your day you're waiting to hear the next one.
I plan on dedicating winter times to a shit ton of ice fishing. Catch or no catch - the experience is bad ass. Snag a fish and its just icing on the cake.
Anyone want to share their ice fishing experiences? Tips and tricks? Any great spots?

That's just it. I stay in during the winter, and try to catch camping/fishing Spring, Summer, and Fall. I hate the cold w/ a passion, but you layer up and set up a tent with a heater on the ice. And the tent (shanti) gets friggin toasty to the point i was in my long sleeve t shirt just chillin w/ a pint, some trees, and a sunny ass -20 day lol.
Your only rlly cold from the car to the spot you choose, drill your holes pitch your tent and booyaka.
Whiskey helps you keep warmer, and enjoy your day a bit more

Make your hole big enough for the biggest fish in the lake.
Can't count how many I've lost trying to work them through a too small hole.

Isn't it illegal to drill a hole bigger than 10inches? If a ranger rolled by - no bueno. But that is what I thought about doing aswell after a nice big lake trout came off my line after trying to pull it through 16" of ice, or better yet trying to even get em into the hole in the first place.

I don't know CO.
If that's the limit, that's the limit. not worth getting your shit confiscated.
10" auger is what I have. and I'll usually chip it out a little more with a hatchet.
Never had anyone stop and check.
Pigs usually just shout hello from the warmth of thier car, just making sure I'm still alive. Never even had my license checked (in IL)

I grew up in Michigan so Ice Fishing was a family tradition. My favorite thing was spearing for Pike. I was gone west finally and so missed the amazing Lake Michigan trout and salmon Ice Fishing.
So I agree it's fun but I prefer a isolated high desert trout stream out here in the West.

I bet ice fishing in lakemichgan would be tight. my favorite place to go would be desolate too. Eleven Mile where I went is a known resevoir in CO for most. There were alot of other people out on the lake, but by 4PM it cleared out.
Althought....by 5pm 6pm it starts freezing "balls" outside. Even your nice warm shanti can't protect you 100% anymore from the cold once the sun goes down.

what did you have for heat?
I got a little mr heater propane thing, runs off one pound cylinders. It's pretty much worthless unless you're leaning right over it.
If I went ice fishing more I'd build an insulated hut.
now I just have a little tent. try not to go when the weather is shitty.
Ice is no good this week. was barely 4 inches last week. I gotta go north.

They have shantytowns in Michigan that are like small condos. Stoves, refrig, bed, VCR, Stereo, and full on heat so you can sleep over. It's insane.

gotta find a lake I can keep an ice shanty at.

Bet that lil fucking heater makes your shanti all toasty dude. I did a rental $70 bucks for the day, they give you all the gear u need n when i got on the lake, pitched shanti n grabbed the heater I was dissapointed, thinking they gave me some old piece of shit heater, but that f**ker worked fine, and made the tent super warm.
When we pitched the shanti we shoveled snow over the flap, end of it on the bottom of it where it meets the ice, helps keep the heat in.

It's another world in those shanties. If you're spearing you have a big four foot or so long hole cut and you are looking at a really cool scene. You usually have a pike minnow swimming around and it draws in bluegill like crazy. You entertain yourself jigging for the bluegill and then all of a sudden they split real fast like. That's your sign that a pike is coming in and then things get real exciting.

It is at first. You have to keep your cool. The big mistake the newb makes is to pull the forks out of the water and then plunging it back down with great force (sometimes even hitting the top of the shanty ) and make a great splash that scares the pike right out of your hole. What you need to learn is to very slowly and gently and preferably put the forks into the water before the pike is in your target zone. Then when he's in position for a shot right behind the head letting the spear go with a push straight down. The fun starts if you make the hit and he's a big one.
