Why is it that...
    #1752840 - 07/27/03 01:41 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

the best music to listen to is usually something you didn't like the first time you heard it? I've noticed that all my favorite songs and albums were stuff that either I didn't like at first or it sounded strange or just plain bad. If I keep listening to it it just grows and grows on me till a point where I suddenly "get it" and I see the ingeniousness of it. And music that I like immediately after hearing for the first time gets more tiresome with each listen and I lose interest in it really fast. It's like the "aquired taste" factor of music. There's exceptions of course, like I could listen to country/western for years and still hate it.

You know I've been thinking about that too and I think it's true. There are some cd's I bought thinking "Why the heck did I buy this crap? This music is totally unlistenable" and then after a few more listens I start to dig it. I think it may have a lot to do with the complexity of song structure that keeps you coming back for more. Pop songs for example have a really simple structure to them with a minimal amount of "fine tuning" and that's what makes them only good for a little while and then they disappear into oblivion. But bands like Jimi Hendrix, old Metallica, Opeth, Tool, Shpongle, and Pink Floyd have lots of time and energy put into them which then requires a good amount of energy on your part to really appreciate it, hence you need multiple listens and it grows on you.

interesting....

I've never thought about that, but I definitely see it now.
Some of my favorite bands took me a while to get used to-- My friends listened to Tool for a year or two before i got passed the 'aggressive energy' and got Lateralus when it came out. 3 shows later and they're at the top of the list.
Chemical Brothers, Boards of Canada, Autechre, Phish...
I agree with choda, if such energy and time is put into something, it needs a certain amount of attention and time and energy to be appreciated.
Nice thread!

Hey that happends to me alot, I think there are many reasons to this, some being you dont get the song, and/or your not in the mood to listen to that style of music, there are probaly other reasons but Im cant think of anymore.

Wow that is really weird, cause it happens to me too. For example i knew about Tool years ago but i didnt find anything that interesting about them, then i bought lateralus and still didnt find it that good. But after listening to it more and on drugs it's definetly one of my faves of all time. Same goes for radiohead and coldplay.

This is so true.  At times while listening to my cd's the thought "I remember when I really didn't like this stuff.." would pass though my mind.  Now I just realized, I disliked, or just hadn't learned to appretiate most of the music I presently listen to for a period of time.  Some types of music just need some time to grow onto you.  Awesome post

radiohead was definitely a band that fits that description for me. For the longest time I just didn't really care to get into them very much, and didn't even own any of their cd's when friends of mine were way into them. Now, about a year or so later, I totally have aquired the Radiohead taste, and I'm going to see them with an amazing group of friends in Houston on Oct. 1st. Has this same sort of thing happened to anyone with a whole genre of music? Hip Hop. I'd never have though 2 years ago that I would some day like listening to hip hop or rap. Jurassic 5, Talib Kweli, Blackalicious... My ears have come to love many different things recently.
