    #1749027 - 07/25/03 05:28 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I was in my backyard working and i kicked some mushrooms over and i noticed that it turned blue immediately, so I was curious to what type they were.

a. Habitat - NW ohio, growing on grass
b. Characteristics of the gills (yellow, attached, pores)
c. Measurements of cap and stem. about 1" for the cap maybe 2" stem is about half an inch
d. Characteristics of the stem (tan, smooth, solid, thick)
e. Characteristics of the cap (brown, smooth, concical, concave)
f. Spore print color (very important!)- i'm making one as i post this
g. Color that the mushroom briuses- a dark blue
h. Scent of mushroom - none

Thank you for your help in advance.

I don't know exactly, have read it is a chemical reaction to O2 just as you surmised.

Yes, that is definitely a bolete. The genus you should be looking at is Boletus. Many boletes are excellent edibles, but as GGreatOne pointed out, any bolete that bruises blue should be left alone by the novice. Despite this fact, boletes are an interesting and diverse genus, with many choice edibles. Check out the Rules for Boletes at http://www.bluewillowpages.com/mushroomexpert/rules_for_boletes.html
The whole page also has other great info on boletes, as well as a key for bolete ID. Take care, keep hunting!

You're not the first to get a hard-on from finding a bluing bolete. Those things get a lot of beginning mushroom hunters excited.

P. caerulipes can be found in Ohio. Look in mulched landscaped areas. But try to take pics and sporeprints. This species seems to be fairly elusive, and IDing it may be difficult without the proper steps taken.
